Two in a row for Lady Broncos

Boyd Christian Middle School is finding its stride at the right time.

The Lady Broncos picked up their second straight victory Monday night, sweeping 931 Volleyball 25-19, 25-21 after beating Highland Rim in three sets Friday.

Maggie Panter helped set the tone immediately. Panter served six straight points to get Boyd rolling in the opening set, providing an early spark in what became a strong start for the Lady Broncos.

Things weren't quite as smooth in the second.

Boyd's movement slowed and some of the mistakes the Lady Broncos have worked throughout the season to eliminate started creeping back into their play. Coach Kenny Chisam called a timeout before those old habits could take over.

“Sometimes you have to stop, reset, and remember what got you there,” said Chisam.

Boyd did exactly that. The Lady Broncos settled down following the timeout, regained their energy and finished off the sweep.

The closing stretch was another example of the growth Chisam has been looking for all season. Earlier in the year, a few mistakes could snowball and completely change a set. Monday, Boyd recognized the problem, regrouped and responded.

The night also included a milestone for one of the Lady Broncos.

“And a special shoutout to Karlee (Ferrell) who had her first kill in match two,” said Chisam.

Monday's victory followed an impressive comeback Friday against Highland Rim. Boyd dropped the opening set before responding to win the next two, including a 17-15 battle in the tiebreaker.

The back-to-back wins have Chisam encouraged by the direction his team is heading as the season winds down.

“We’re learning, we’re growing, and most importantly, we’re learning how to battle through the tough moments instead of letting them take us backwards,” said Chisam.

Boyd can try to make it three in a row Tuesday night at home against the TN Heat. Action will begin at 5 p.m.
