The Boyd Christian Middle School Lady Broncos have spent the season learning how to respond when things don't go their way. Friday night, they put that lesson to good use.
Boyd bounced back from a rough opening set to defeat Highland Rim in three at J.K. Stanley Gymnasium, rallying for a 14-25, 25-21, 17-15 victory.
After being handled in the opener, the Lady Broncos could have allowed the match to get away quickly. Instead, they regrouped and some familiar faces helped turn things around.
Kashlyn Garrett continued to impact the match all the way around, while Moni Harris made her presence felt at the net. Boyd found its footing in the second set, stayed together through the momentum swings and earned a 25-21 victory to force a tiebreaker.
The third was a battle all the way to the finish.
Neither team could create enough separation to put the match away in regulation, forcing the deciding set beyond 15. With every point magnified, Boyd found the plays it needed late to finish off a 17-15 victory.
Coach Kenny Chisam saw the comeback as another sign of the progress his team has been making throughout the season.
“The whole team worked incredibly hard tonight,” said Chisam. “From the opening serve to the final point, they showed plenty of hustle, teamwork and determination. They continued to battle for every point and showed the kind of improvement that has been building throughout the season.
“It was a complete team effort. The girls stayed focused, competed hard and found ways to make the big plays when they needed them.”
That was particularly evident after the opening set. Boyd didn't erase the mistakes it made early, but the Lady Broncos didn't allow them to determine what happened next either, something Chisam has emphasized throughout the season.
Boyd will try to continue to rack up wins Monday when it travels to play 931 Volleyball. Action should begin at 5 p.m. The Lady Broncos return home for a matchup with TN Heat Tuesday.
