Eagles soar, West and Dibrell on collision course

Morrison isn't the same team that stumbled to a 1-4 start. The Eagles have found their wings, and Monday night at Centertown, they showed just how dangerous they could be down the stretch.

Behind a dominant defensive effort and another strong performance from Trey Hawkins and Sawyer McCormick, Morrison rolled past the Warriors 35-22 to extend its winning streak to four games. The Eagles improved to 5-4, moving above .500 for the first time this season and completing a regular-season sweep of Centertown.

The first meeting between the longtime rivals was a 28-27 thriller at Morrison. The rematch was anything but close early.

Morrison scored the game's first 15 points, shutting out Centertown throughout the opening quarter. Hawkins attacked the basket, McCormick pushed the pace and the Eagles' aggressive man-to-man defense made it difficult for the Warriors to find any openings.

The Eagles led 20-8 at halftime and stretched their advantage to 30-8 after three quarters. Centertown found some offense in the fourth, outscoring Morrison 14-5, but the outcome had long been decided.

Hawkins led Morrison with 12 points, while McCormick added 11. James Starkey and Mason Kuehnhold scored four apiece, while Greyson Hawkins and Luke Harris finished with two each.

Easton Parker and Noah Simpson scored eight points apiece for Centertown, which played without two of its leading scorers, Colt Bratcher and Greyson Eubanks. Remington Adcock added four points and Christian Simpson scored two.

The improvement under first-year Morrison coach Lukas Phillips has been hard to miss. The former Cannon County standout has the Eagles playing aggressive defense, attacking the basket and sharing the basketball. McCormick was especially impressive Monday, constantly chasing down loose balls, pushing the ball in transition and creating opportunities through his hustle.

Morrison has now won five of its last six games, including two victories over Centertown, and suddenly looks capable of making some noise when postseason play arrives.

The Eagles weren't the only team making a statement Monday. Dibrell and West both delivered blowout victories, setting the stage for Thursday's highly anticipated meeting between the league's top two teams.

Dibrell looked rested and ready following its week off, overwhelming Eastside 56-9 behind a balanced scoring attack. River Rice led the Wildcats with 18 points, while Jeb Culwell added 13, Owen Willis scored 10 and Mason Kieffer contributed eight. Jean Garcia finished with five and Brennon Benton added two.

The Wildcats erupted for 23 points in the third quarter, with Rice scoring 10 in the period and Culwell knocking down a 3-pointer. Willis and Kieffer, two players who have made their biggest contributions defensively this season, each enjoyed season-high scoring performances.

Eastside managed just three field goals, all from beyond the arc. Grayson Shaffer hit two 3-pointers to finish with six points, while Ethan Patel added another for three.

The victory moved Dibrell to 7-1 and kept the Wildcats one game behind unbeaten West.

The Wizards made sure they would enter Thursday's showdown without a blemish, cruising past Bobby Ray 47-13.

Byron Keyes delivered one of his best performances of the season, scoring 16 points and capping his night with a fourth-quarter 3-pointer. Cam Chadwell added 15 points, giving West two players who individually outscored the Stars. Princeton Scott chipped in six points, Malik Ellis and Karsen Jones added four and Bruno Barrera scored two.

Jayden Terry scored 10 points for Bobby Ray, while Sawyer Pearson added two and Adam Anderson finished with one.

West improved to 8-0, setting up a Thursday home showdown with Dibrell that could go a long way toward deciding the regular-season championship. The Wizards have been the team to beat all season, but the Wildcats have spent the last several weeks proving they belong in the same conversation.

Hickory Creek also picked up a convincing road victory Monday, pulling away from Boyd 32-14 at JK Stanley Gymnasium behind a big second half from Noah Mallette.

The Hawks jumped ahead 10-0 in the first quarter, but the Broncos managed to slow them down before halftime, holding Hickory Creek to just two points in the second period. Boyd trailed 12-4 at the break before Mallette took over.

Mallette scored all 12 of his points after halftime, helping the Hawks outscore Boyd 20-10 over the final two quarters. Hickory Creek mixed fast-break opportunities with patient half-court offense, while its defense swarmed Boyd big man Heath Judkins and kept him scoreless until the fourth quarter.

Po Haywood added nine points for the Hawks, while Caleb Lippe scored three. Asher Mathis, Preston Wanamaker, KD Scott and Beckett Butler finished with two points apiece.

Jax Burger led Boyd with six points. Sailor Curtis, Judkins, Samuel Ferguson and Jase Burger each added two.

The victory improved Hickory Creek to 5-4, giving the Hawks a winning record as the regular season enters its final stretch. Boyd dropped to 2-6.
