Boyd stays perfect, Centertown continues chase

The Boyd Lady Broncos have spent much of the elementary basketball season making life miserable for opposing offenses. Monday night at JK Stanley Gymnasium was no different, with the league leaders delivering another defensive masterpiece to keep their unbeaten season rolling.

Boyd shut out Hickory Creek in the opening quarter and never let the Lady Hawks find any offensive rhythm in a 28-6 victory. The Lady Broncos improved to 8-0, continuing a season in which their biggest competition may be their own lofty expectations.

There were stretches Monday when Boyd looked every bit like a team determined to finish the regular season unbeaten. The Lady Broncos led 6-0 after one quarter and 12-2 at halftime before exploding for 12 points in the third quarter to put the game away.

Oly Cathcart led Boyd with 10 points, while Sky Wright added nine and Juliette Ferguson finished with five. Nora Long and Kenna Brewer scored two apiece as Boyd's trio of stars each had moments to shine.

Defensively, the Lady Broncos made nearly every possession difficult for Hickory Creek. Hattie Scott managed four points, scoring twice in the second half, while Blakely Martin added two in the fourth straight loss for the Lady Hawks.

While Boyd continues to set the standard, Centertown is making sure the race for the top spots in the standings remains interesting.

The surging Lady Warriors turned in an impressive performance on their home floor Monday, leading from start to finish in a 30-7 victory over Morrison.

Lynlee Taylor delivered another standout performance, pouring in 18 points to lead Centertown. Taylor scored 12 in the first half as the Lady Warriors built a 17-5 advantage, and the defense made sure Morrison never had an opportunity to mount a comeback.

Centertown held the Lady Eagles scoreless in the third quarter and allowed just two points in the fourth, finishing off a convincing victory that improved the Lady Warriors to 8-1.

Taylor had help from the wings, where Arie Shehane scored five points and Camilla Lopez added four. Audree Fitts finished with two and Mia Higgins contributed one.

Piper Huff led Morrison with four points, while Tinleigh George scored two and Julianna Hawkins added one.

The Lady Warriors remain on pace for the No. 2 seed in the postseason tournament, continuing to build momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch.

Eastside also kept its recent improvement going Monday, turning what was a close game early into a 20-2 rout of Dibrell.

The Lady Bulldogs led just 2-1 after the first quarter before Mia Rodriguez took over. Rodriguez scored all eight of her game-high points in the second period, powering a 8-1 run that sent Eastside into halftime with a 10-2 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs never allowed another point, shutting out Dibrell throughout the second half to secure their fourth victory of the season.

Sayla Winfree added six points for Eastside, while Haven Hicks, Ada Crouch and Elizabeth Grigg each scored two.

Dibrell was held without a field goal for the entire game. Piper Hall knocked down a first-quarter free throw and Lyla Wood added one in the second period for the Lady Wildcats' only points.

Eastside improved to 4-4, reaching the .500 mark after a difficult start to the season.

Bobby Ray continued its own climb up the standings with a 17-4 victory over West in a matchup of teams that both play their home games at Bobby Ray.

The Lady Stars looked plenty comfortable in the familiar surroundings, particularly once point guard Emmie Taylor found her rhythm.

Taylor scored 13 points, more than tripling West's entire offensive output. She scored all six of Bobby Ray's second-half points, helping the Lady Stars maintain control after building an 11-2 halftime advantage.

Nyla Millraney added four points for Bobby Ray, which improved to 4-4 and has shown significant growth as the season has progressed.

Iztel Cardenas Lopez scored all four points for West, which fell to 0-8.
