MPD responds to domestic disturbance and barricade situation
On Sept. 3, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m., officers with the McMinnville Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Dogwood Point Road in reference to a domestic disturbance.
Upon receiving information that a physical altercation had occurred, children were present, and an individual was outside on the porch with a weapon and had access to additional weapons and ammunition, officers responded to the scene.
Upon officers’ arrival, the suspect immediately retreated inside the residence and barricaded himself inside. Officers’ first priority was to ensure the safety of the victim and the children. Officers assisted in getting the victim and children safely away from the immediate area.
Officers immediately began efforts to establish communication with the suspect and de-escalate the situation in an attempt to peacefully resolve the incident.
During the barricade situation, the suspect fired on officers multiple times from inside the residence. Despite the danger, officers continued working to contain the scene and resolve the situation as safely as possible.
Due to the circumstances and the potential threat to officers, residents, and the surrounding community, mutual aid was requested from multiple agencies.
Murfreesboro Police Department personnel, including personnel utilizing an armored vehicle, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Homeland Security, and EMS responded to assist the McMinnville Police Department.
Additional measures were taken to protect the surrounding community. Efforts were made to evacuate residents from the immediate area, and school buses were rerouted to ensure that no children were brought into the area while the incident remained active.
Law enforcement personnel continued de-escalation efforts for approximately six and a half hours in an attempt to peacefully resolve the situation and bring the incident to an end without anyone being injured.
Unfortunately, the situation ultimately escalated when the suspect exited the residence armed with a weapon in each hand and fired at officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The suspect was identified as 44-year-old Scott Carroll, Jr.
No law-enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
In situations such as this, our goal is always for everyone involved—including the individual at the center of the situation—to leave safely and unharmed. Unfortunately, that was not the outcome in this case.
I want to express my sincere appreciation to all of the agencies and personnel who responded and assisted during this lengthy and challenging incident. The cooperation and professionalism displayed by the Murfreesboro Police Department personnel, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Homeland Security, and EMS were instrumental in helping manage the situation and protect our community. The incident occurred during a day involving multiple law-enforcement events, along with extreme heat conditions, making the response particularly demanding for the officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, and other first responders involved.
I am extremely thankful that these agencies came together to support one another and our community during an extremely difficult situation. Their assistance, coordination, and professionalism helped keep the victim, children, residents, motorists, and responding personnel as safe as possible and helped prevent a bad situation from resulting in an even worse outcome.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Scott Carroll, Jr. as they navigate the days ahead. We also extend our thoughts and prayers to all of the law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, and other first responders who were involved in this incident.
