Abuse of a corpse trial

A man who has called Warren County Jail home for the last two years may finally have his day in court.

Joshua Wayne Goff was arrested in August of 2024 and charged with abuse of a corpse and two counts of tampering with evidence in connection with the disappearance and death of 29-year-old Rebecca Maxfield. He has been in court more than a dozen times since then. A jury trial has been slated for Aug. 20 at 9 a.m. before Judge Larry B. Stanley Jr.

Maxfield, of Smithville, was reported missing on Aug. 4 after failing to respond to repeated calls and texts. Her body was discovered by a Warren County Sheriff’s investigator inside a vehicle located in a cornfield along New Bildad Road in Dekalb County on Aug. 9. Goff was arrested Aug. 19.

Goff, who is being represented by Attorney Billy K. Tollison, has been held on a $1 million bond.

Goff is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
