Smooth Rapids rolling along

Like many great businesses, Smooth Rapids got its start in a garage. That was back in 2012.

“We started with 20 boats, and we were working out of my garage,” said co-owner Jimmy Barker. “None of us really thought it would amount to much.”

The business has exceeded expectations to say the least. Smooth Rapids has become a destination, with visitors coming from across the nation.

“We’ve had kayakers from all 50 states except Hawaii,” said Jimmy. “And the campground has had people stay from almost every state, even Alaska.”

That wasn’t on anyone’s radar in 2012 when Smooth Rapids was formed with four partners – Jimmy Barker, Mickey Heath, Michael Lockhart, and Todd Barker. All four remain today.

The business has grown into something grand – and a wonderful part of our community.

“This has probably been the best thing I’ve done in my life,” said Jimmy, whose constant presence at the restaurant has made him the face of the business and earned him the nickname Uncle Jimmy.

Smooth Rapids started with 20 kayaks and now has an armada of 146 boats. On a busy Saturday, they will drop off and pick up some 200 kayakers.

The campground has been showered with substantially more business since a bathhouse was added three years ago. The campground is nestled along the Barren Fork River and tucked under a layer of relaxing trees.

There are 26 campground spots in all, 13 for RVs with full hookups and 13 for tents.

Smooth Rapids embodies the outdoorsy atmosphere Warren County has cultivated.

“Kayaking and camping are a big part of what people look for when they want to get outdoors,” said Jimmy. “Hiking is another thing, and we have plenty of hiking trails nearby. The only thing missing is we don’t have rock climbing.”

Smooth Rapids has paddled its way to refreshing waters. The business is celebrating 14 years, including nine years for the restaurant at 245 Durham Street. And it all started in Jimmy’s garage.
