Highly Anticipated Return
Personal column from Warren County Way news editor Lisa Hobbs.
I’m back!
Life has a way of making sure you know that you aren’t in charge of your own destiny. It continually reminds you that you’re just a small piece of the puzzle, which can be ever changing. It can feel like those darned Rubiks Cubes from the 1980s that you just couldn’t figure out.
For those of you who remember me, I spent 17 years at the Southern Standard from 2005 to 2022. I covered what I called the good, the bad and the ugly in city and county government, as well as wrecks, fires, human interest and school news. I also spearheaded a student spotlight and a pet of the week. I was called a workhorse in editorial by the former publisher; I told myself that was said with affection.
Given that terminology, I was passed over for a promotion. I left five weeks after James.
Since October 2022, I’ve been editor and general manager of Grundy County Herald. Also, since October 2022, I’ve missed covering the news in Warren County. I made the best of it and turned that newspaper into something its residents could be proud of. Behind the scenes, I did make the occasional attempt to get back into Warren County, but to no avail; more proof that we aren’t always in charge.
I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to Chris Sullens, who offered me what I had highly anticipated for almost four years - the opportunity to come back. I’m news editor and director of public relations with the Warren County Way.
To be honest with you, dear reader, I got so irritated by my Rubiks Cube that I peeled the stickers off and eventually broke it apart. What a waste of $2. I would have been better off saving it in its original wrapping. Today, it would have been worth $100. Say la vee to netting $98. However, I’ll take this latest business endeavor as a major consolation prize.
It was well worth the patience I didn't show the color-matching puzzle that tormented me in my teens.
