A heartfelt ‘thank you’ for Bennett

After 50 years serving the citizens of Warren County as a teacher, coach, principal and member of the Warren County Board of Education, James Bennett is retiring.
During Thursday night’s Board of Education meeting, he was recognized by Director of Schools Dr. Grant Swallows.
“Tonight, it’s my privilege to recognize Mr. James Bennett as he completes his service on the Warren County Board of Education. It’s really difficult to adequately recognize someone whose service to Warren County Schools spans 50 years.
“Mr. Bennett began his career in 1973, and he spent 38 years serving our school system as a teacher, a coach, and administrator. He taught and he coached at Warren County Junior High, served as principal at Morrison Elementary, and later, he became principal over Warren County High School. After retiring as an educator, he continued that service for another 12 years as a member of the Warren County Board of Education.
“Very few people have had the opportunity to see Warren County Schools from as many perspectives as Mr. Bennett has. He has experienced the school system as a teacher, a coach, a principal and a board member, and that experience has given him a strong understanding of our schools and the people who make them work. Throughout his time on the board, Mr. Bennett has wanted to see Warren County Schools succeed and has held high expectations for our school system. He has also consistently believed that one of the board’s most important responsibilities is to support our employees and give them the resources and opportunities they need to do their jobs well. His perspective has been shaped by the many years he spent working inside our schools and the understanding, firsthand, the demands placed on those who serve our students each day.
“I stole this from an article that Mr. Jeff Simmons wrote, ‘While Mr. Bennett has held many titles throughout the years, I know there is one that remains especially meaningful to him. For many of the students and athletes whose lives crossed his path, he will always be Coach Bennett. After all these years, that title still carries a great deal of meaning.’
“Mr. Bennett, your 50 years of service to one school system is an extraordinary legacy. On behalf of Warren County Schools and this community, thank you for your time, experience and commitment you have given to our schools. We appreciate your service and wish you the very best in your years ahead.”
Dr. Swallows presented Bennett with an engraved award in recognition of his dedicated service and leadership on the Warren County Board of Education, from 2014 to 2026.
“Like Dr. Swallows said, it has been my goal all these years to have the best school system in the state of Tennessee,” Bennett stated. “It has been my goal for every student, no matter what their academic is, ability to learn, so that they will be someone when they leave our school system. I want to thank, again, all of the employees that I’ve had the pleasure of being with, all the athletes, all the students, and especially all the parents. Thank you very much.”
