Wizards clinch regular-season title

West has been the team to beat in elementary boys basketball all season. Thursday night, the Wizards made sure nobody else would be taking home the regular-season championship.

In a showdown between the league's top two teams, West delivered another dominant defensive performance to defeat Dibrell 26-17, improving to 9-0 and clinching the regular-season title.

The victory gave the Wizards a two-game advantage over the Wildcats with the head-to-head tiebreaker in hand, ensuring the championship would belong to West regardless of how its final regular-season game plays out next week.

West's big three of Cam Chadwell, Princeton Scott and Byron Keyes delivered when it mattered most. Chadwell scored 10 points, Scott added nine and Keyes finished with seven, accounting for every point in the Wizards' biggest victory of the season.

The Wizards led 9-7 after the first quarter before their defense completely took over. West shut out Dibrell in the second period, building a 14-7 halftime advantage against a Wildcat team that entered the matchup averaging nearly 40 points per game.

The defensive effort was nothing new for West, which has made frustrating opposing offenses a trademark of its unbeaten season.

With Dibrell searching for answers, Chadwell and Scott went to work in the third quarter. Both guards sliced through the Wildcat defense for a pair of baskets, helping West stretch its advantage to 24-11 entering the fourth.

Scott was particularly impressive. Already one of the league's premier defenders, the talented guard has become an increasingly dangerous offensive weapon late in the season. He knocked down an early 3-pointer and continued attacking the basket as West pulled away.

Dibrell made a final push in the fourth quarter, outscoring West 6-2, but the Wildcats couldn't overcome the deficit.

Jeb Culwell led Dibrell with 11 points, while River Rice added four and Bentley Harper scored two.

The Wildcats fell to 7-2, while West moved one step closer to completing a perfect regular season.

Eagles win another thriller

Morrison and Irving College have developed a knack for producing entertaining basketball. Thursday's matchup at Morrison was another instant classic, with the Eagles finding just enough offense late to secure a 27-24 victory.

It was a battle of Morrison's skill against Irving College's relentless determination, and neither team was willing to give an inch.

Sawyer McCormick delivered the biggest baskets of the night, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to help Morrison survive a back-and-forth finish. McCormick led all scorers with 11 points as the Eagles extended their winning streak to five games.

Trey Hawkins added nine points, including seven in the second half, despite facing a Tiger defense determined to keep Morrison's leading offensive threat from taking over.

Irving College's defensive approach made Hawkins work for everything, but the Eagles found contributions from throughout their lineup to maintain their advantage.

Morrison led 4-2 after the first quarter and 11-8 at halftime before the Tigers began making their move.

Nathaneel Johnson provided a major spark off the bench, knocking down two important baskets in the third quarter as Irving College trimmed the deficit to 17-16 entering the fourth.

Ryan Yates added a clutch 3-pointer in the final period, keeping the Tigers within striking distance as the lead remained up for grabs.

But every time Irving College threatened to take control, Morrison found an answer.

McCormick's fourth-quarter scoring proved decisive, while Hawkins continued finding ways to contribute against a defense focused on stopping him.

Yates led Irving College with seven points, while Johnson finished with six. Gunnar Powers added four, True Lusk scored three and Weston Walker and Tucker Fann contributed two apiece.

Mason Kuehnhold, James Starkey and Greyson Hawkins each scored two points for Morrison, while Luke Harris added one.

The victory improved Morrison to 6-4, a remarkable turnaround for a team that started the season 1-4. The Eagles have now won five straight and are playing their best basketball as the postseason approaches.

Irving College fell to 5-4 despite another hard-fought effort.

Warriors back at full strength

Centertown welcomed back its dynamic backcourt Thursday, and the Warriors wasted little time showing how dangerous they can be at full strength.

Colt Bratcher and Greyson Eubanks combined for 27 points as Centertown rolled past Hickory Creek 37-20 at home.

Bratcher led the Warriors with 14 points, while Eubanks added 13. The duo provided the offensive firepower Centertown had been missing in its previous loss to Morrison, when both players were unavailable.

Centertown led 8-4 after the first quarter before breaking the game open with a 13-5 second period. The Warriors carried a 21-9 advantage into halftime and continued building their lead after the break.

Hickory Creek's Asher Mathis did his best to keep the Hawks competitive, scoring a team-high 10 points. Po Haywood added six and Caleb Lippe finished with four.

But Centertown's balanced attack and the return of its two top backcourt threats proved too much.

Noah Simpson and Easton Parker added four points apiece for the Warriors, while Maddux Underhill scored two.

The victory improved Centertown to 7-3, while Hickory Creek fell to 5-5.
