Thursday night brought three different reasons to celebrate in elementary girls basketball. West finally broke into the win column, Centertown continued strengthening its hold on second place and Irving College bounced back from its toughest loss of the season with another suffocating defensive performance.
The biggest celebration came at Bobby Ray Gym, where the Lady Wizards snapped an eight-game losing streak to open the season with a 15-3 victory over Dibrell. Meanwhile, Centertown improved to 9-1 with a 19-9 victory over Hickory Creek, and Irving College shut down Morrison 16-4 to remain firmly in the race near the top of the standings.
For West, Thursday's victory was a long-awaited breakthrough. The Lady Wizards had endured plenty of difficult nights during their winless start, but this time they were the ones controlling the action from the opening quarter.
Itzel Cardenas-Lopez led the way with seven points, helping West establish an early advantage that its defense made sure would hold up.
The Lady Wizards led 4-1 after the first quarter and held Dibrell scoreless in both the second and third periods. West carried an 11-1 lead into the fourth before closing out its first victory of the season.
Kayleigh Redmon added four points, while Nora Harris and Allison Becerra scored two apiece. Piper Hall accounted for all three Dibrell points.
The final buzzer gave West a chance to celebrate something it had been chasing all season. After eight straight losses, the Lady Wizards finally had their first win.
While West was celebrating a breakthrough, Irving College was reminding everyone why the Lady Tigers remain one of the league's most dangerous teams.
Just two nights after pushing unbeaten Boyd harder than any opponent has all season, Irving College responded with a 16-4 victory at Morrison, using its increasingly difficult 2-3 zone defense to completely frustrate the Lady Eagles.
Morrison didn't score until the fourth quarter. By then, Irving College had built a 16-0 advantage behind a defensive effort that left the Lady Eagles searching for answers throughout the night.
The Lady Tigers have become particularly effective at clogging the paint, cutting off driving lanes and forcing opponents into difficult shots. That formula worked to perfection Thursday as Irving College held Morrison without a point for 30 minutes.
Willow Hertwig got the offense going early, while Sophia Stubblefield provided a spark in the second quarter. Both finished with four points.
Mosley Pepper continued to emerge as a valuable contributor off the bench, scoring four points, including a basket in the fourth quarter. Amaya Morrison and Hadlee Green added two points apiece.
Saylor Ferrell and Lola Murphy finally broke through with baskets in the final period for Morrison.
The victory improved Irving College to 7-2 and provided an impressive response to Tuesday's 14-6 loss against Boyd and showed its defense continues to look capable of giving anybody problems when tournament time arrives.
Centertown, meanwhile, continued its own late-season surge with a dominant opening quarter against Hickory Creek.
The Lady Warriors raced to a 12-0 advantage in the first 10 minutes and never looked back, cruising to a 19-9 victory that improved their record to 9-1.
Lynlee Taylor has been the offensive centerpiece for Centertown in recent games, but Thursday was a showcase of the Lady Warriors' depth.
Camilla Lopez, Chloe Melton, Mia Higgins and Arie Shehane all scored in the opening quarter, giving Centertown a balanced attack that overwhelmed Hickory Creek before the Lady Hawks could settle into the game.
Taylor finished with a team-high five points, while Lopez and Melton added four apiece. Higgins, Shehane and Audree Fults scored two each.
Centertown led 16-3 at halftime and 18-5 entering the fourth quarter, allowing the Lady Warriors to cruise through the final minutes.
Hickory Creek struggled to find offense throughout the night. Addy Walter scored the Lady Hawks' first field goal in the second quarter, while Iris Bouldin added a late layup. Kimber Lowe supplied the rest of the offense with five free throws.
Lowe led Hickory Creek with five points, while Walter and Bouldin scored two apiece.
