Monday night brought big performances, important wins in the standings and a few more signs that the elementary basketball races are starting to take shape. Centertown left Hickory Creek with a pair of victories, West kept its unbeaten boys season rolling and Morrison continued building momentum, while the Bobby Ray and Eastside girls delivered impressive wins of their own.
The biggest matchup of the night came at Hickory Creek, where Centertown entered with plenty at stake in both games. The Warriors won a back-and-forth boys battle 34-28 behind a 16-point performance from Colt Bratcher, while the Lady Warriors rallied in the second half for a 21-12 victory that moved them into sole possession of second place in the girls standings.
West's boys remained the only unbeaten team in the league with a 30-6 victory over Bobby Ray, while Morrison followed last week's upset of Centertown with a commanding 44-6 win over Eastside. On the girls side, Bobby Ray continued showing its improvement with a 19-11 win over West and Eastside rolled past Morrison 26-3.
The scheduled Boyd-Irving College games were postponed until Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Bratcher leads Warriors past Hawks
There was no shortage of offense when Centertown and Hickory Creek squared off Monday, and the two teams spent most of the night trading baskets before the Warriors finally found some breathing room.
Bratcher was nearly unstoppable for Centertown, pouring in 16 points with an assortment of jumpers, drives through the defense and finishes in the open court. The Warrior standout saved some of his best work for the fourth quarter, when his team needed somebody to take control.
Centertown and Hickory Creek were tied 8-8 after the first quarter before the Hawks took a slim 17-16 advantage into halftime. The Warriors responded by winning the third quarter 8-7, sending the teams into the final period deadlocked at 24.
That's when Bratcher took over.
The Warrior guard scored six points in the fourth quarter, helping Centertown outscore Hickory Creek 10-4 over the final period. His two late free throws helped put the finishing touches on a 34-28 road victory.
Greyson Eubanks added 10 points for the Warriors, while Noah Simpson contributed six and Maddux Underhill finished with two.
Hickory Creek had plenty of offensive firepower of its own, particularly from Caleb Lippe. The Hawk sharpshooter buried three 3-pointers, including two in the second quarter, and added a free throw to finish with a team-high 10 points.
Po Haywood chipped in eight, while Noah Mallette and Beckett Butler scored four apiece. Asher Mathis rounded out the scoring with two.
The victory moved Centertown to 5-2, giving the Warriors an important win over another team battling near the top of the boys standings. Hickory Creek dropped to 4-3.
Higgins sparks Lady Warriors' second-half comeback
Mia Higgins picked an ideal time for her biggest game of the season.
With Centertown trying to separate itself from a crowded group of contenders behind unbeaten Boyd, Higgins delivered eight points and helped the Lady Warriors overcome a halftime deficit to beat Hickory Creek 21-12.
The Lady Hawks had the upper hand early, using their defense to build an 8-6 advantage by halftime. Centertown needed a spark, and Higgins provided one when the teams returned to the floor.
Higgins scored twice during a decisive third-quarter surge as the Lady Warriors outscored Hickory Creek 7-0. In a matter of minutes, Centertown turned a two-point deficit into a 13-8 lead and seized control of the game.
The Lady Warriors kept attacking in the fourth quarter, with Higgins, Camilla Lopez, Lynlee Taylor and Chloe Melton all contributing around the basket.
Lopez finished with six points, Taylor added five and Melton scored two as Centertown pulled away for its sixth victory of the season.
Kimber Lowe tried to bring Hickory Creek back late, powering her way to the basket for a pair of scores, but the Lady Warriors had already established enough separation to protect their lead. Lowe finished with six points, Hattie Scott scored five and Abi Lewis added one.
The victory moved Centertown to 6-1 and into sole possession of second place in the girls league, at least for the night. Hickory Creek fell to 5-2 after suffering its second consecutive defeat.
For the Lady Warriors, the win was about more than another mark in the victory column. With several teams chasing Boyd, winning a head-to-head matchup against another contender could prove especially valuable as the championship race continues.
Coach Bracton Womack continues to push all the right buttons for the undefeated West Wizards.
West defense overwhelms Bobby Ray
The West Wizards have made a habit of turning defense into offense this season, and Monday's matchup against Bobby Ray might have been one of their most complete defensive efforts yet.
West forced turnover after turnover, giving the Stars almost no room to operate in a 30-6 victory that kept the Wizards undefeated.
The Wizards led 19-1 at halftime, with Bobby Ray's lone point coming on a Braxton Johnson free throw. The Stars wouldn't get a field goal to fall until the fourth quarter, when Jayden Terry and Alton Ray finally broke through with baskets.
Cam Chadwell and Byron Keyes led West with seven points apiece, while Princeton Scott and Malik Ellis each added six.
Chadwell did all his scoring in the first half, including a 3-pointer before the break that helped the Wizards establish their commanding advantage.
Scott, one of the leaders of West's relentless defense, provided an offensive spark after halftime. He scored all six of his points in the second half as the Wizards continued turning defensive pressure into scoring opportunities.
West also began getting its bench involved late, with Kymonte Ellis providing one final celebration when he scored a basket. Bruno Berrera added two points as the Wizards spread the scoring among six players.
Terry and Ray finished with two points apiece for Bobby Ray, while Johnson and Sawyer Pearson each scored one.
The victory moved West to 6-0, keeping the Wizards alone atop the boys standings. Bobby Ray dropped to 0-6.
Lady Stars shine in rivalry victory
Bobby Ray's girls have taken their share of lumps while developing a young nucleus, but the Lady Stars are starting to show just how far they've come.
Nyla Millraney and Emberlyn Taylor combined for 15 points Monday, leading Bobby Ray to a 19-11 victory over rival West and giving the Lady Stars another reason to believe their best basketball is still ahead.
Taylor was the early difference-maker.
The Lady Star guard attacked the basket repeatedly in the first half, scoring six points before the break. West struggled to get its offense going and didn't score until the second quarter, allowing Bobby Ray to establish a 10-5 halftime advantage.
Taylor eventually finished with seven points, but her early aggressiveness helped set the tone for the entire game.
Devyn Gennings gave Bobby Ray another boost in the third quarter, converting a pair of layups to finish with four points. As the Lady Stars continued building their lead, Millraney stepped forward to help close out the victory.
Millraney finished with a team-high eight points, giving Bobby Ray a dependable offensive option down the stretch.
Kayleigh Redmon did her best to keep West within striking distance, powering her way to seven points. Novalee Wood and Itzel Cardenas-Lopez added two points apiece for the Lady Wizards.
Bobby Ray improved to 2-4, continuing a promising stretch for a team that endured a difficult season a year ago. West fell to 0-6.
Morrison boys keep rolling behind Hawkins
The Morrison Eagles are starting to figure things out, and their latest performance suggests last week's upset of Centertown was no fluke.
Morrison followed that dramatic one-point victory with its most explosive offensive showing of the season Monday, overwhelming Eastside 44-6 at home.
Trey Hawkins was the driving force behind the rout, scoring all 15 of his points in the first half.
Hawkins found just about every way imaginable to score, knocking down jumpers, collecting offensive rebounds for putbacks and swooping through the defense for layups. By halftime, the Eagle standout had already put together a performance that would have been enough to beat Eastside on his own.
Sawyer McCormick continued his strong season with eight points, also individually outscoring the Bulldogs.
James Starkey, one of the heroes of Morrison's comeback victory over Centertown, added six points to match Eastside's entire offensive output.
The Eagles received contributions throughout their lineup. Greyson Hawkins and Mason Kuehnhold scored four apiece, while Anderson Caten, Kouper Idlewine and Luke Harris each added two. Ashton White rounded out the scoring with one.
Eastside's Grayson Shaffer accounted for all six Bulldog points, scoring a basket in each of the first three quarters. Despite his steady production, the Bulldogs couldn't keep pace with Morrison's balanced attack.
The Eagles improved to 3-4 with their second consecutive victory after a 1-4 start. Eastside dropped to 0-6.
With Hawkins providing a scoring punch, McCormick continuing to produce and several other Eagles finding ways to contribute, Morrison is becoming a much more dangerous opponent as the season progresses.
Mia Rodriguez continues to help the Lady Bulldogs build momentum in the standings.
Lady Bulldogs continue flying under the radar
While Boyd remains unbeaten and several other teams battle for position near the top of the girls standings, Eastside has quietly been putting together an impressive stretch of basketball.
The Lady Bulldogs added another dominant performance Monday, cruising to a 26-3 road victory over Morrison behind the speed of Mia Rodriguez and the all-around play of Haven Hicks.
Rodriguez was a blur from the opening tip.
One of the fastest guards in the elementary league, Rodriguez repeatedly beat defenders to the basket, scoring six quick points to establish Eastside's offensive rhythm. Once she started attacking, Morrison had few answers for her speed.
Rodriguez finished with a game-high 11 points, while Hicks added nine to give Eastside a powerful combination of perimeter quickness and production around the basket.
Ada Crouch, Avery Kate Basham and Elizabeth Grigg each contributed two points as the Lady Bulldogs spread the offense among five players.
Morrison struggled to find scoring opportunities against Eastside's defense. Aubree White scored two points for the Lady Eagles, while Tinleigh George added one.
Eastside improved to 3-3, reaching the .500 mark while continuing to build momentum. Morrison fell to 2-5.
The Lady Bulldogs may not be getting the same attention as the teams battling for second place, but with Rodriguez and Hicks leading the way, Eastside is showing it has the talent to make life difficult for opponents in the weeks ahead.
