WCMS waits out weather, beats Tullahoma

LB Guthrie had two goals in Monday’s win over Tullahoma.
Neither Tullahoma nor Mother Nature could spoil the WCMS Lady Pioneers' long-awaited home debut Monday night.
After battling a few weather delays, the Warren County Middle School soccer team finally took the field at home and found a way to come out on top against the Tullahoma Wildcats, earning a 2-0 victory behind two goals from LB Guthrie. The Lady Pioneers remained focused despite the game being pushed by nearly two hours, returning to the field to continue to compete. Despite the unusual circumstances, Warren County was able to stay composed to finish with another victory, improving to 4-0.
The Lady Pioneers had plenty of momentum on their side of the game after starting the season with three games on the road. Monday was their opportunity to play in front of the home crowd and Guthrie found the back of the net early, putting the Lady Pioneers on top 1-0 in the first five minutes.
For Warren County, playing at home for the first time this season was exciting. Coach Sally Willmore said, “Our girls were excited to finally have a season game at home. Despite the weather delays, they came out with a lot of energy and I am super proud of them for that.”
“Being at home, they love to be able to come play in front of their classmates and family members who do not get to travel to away matches so a win at home is always extra special.”
The ball was back and forth all game, but the Lady Pioneers found a way to keep the ball towards their goal for the majority of the first half. With about one minute remaining in the first half, the ball came across midfield and both teams were off to gain control.
The Lady Pioneers won the battle of possession and another goal from Guthrie put the team up 2-0. Tullahoma had opportunities to get the ball into the goal, but the Lady Pioneers held strong on the defensive side to go into halftime on top.
In the second half, the weather had other plans, starting with another delay with 19:58 remaining. After some discussion, the game was called for the night to give the Lady Pioneers a shutout victory at home.
Despite the night’s struggles with weather, Warren County was able to accomplish its goal and walk away with another victory to put its record at 4-0. The Lady Pioneers showed they could maintain their focus and energy.
As they return to the field Friday, the team will look to carry the momentum from the win into the next matchup.
“We hope to bring the same energy from tonight’s game to Friday night's game and try to build off the lessons we’ve learned from our other games,” Willmore said.
The Lady Pioneers will take the field at home against Algood Middle School at 6 p.m. Friday night.
