Old Testament Athletes now 6-0
The Old Testament Athletes aren't just winning anymore. They're separating themselves from the field.
The league's lone unbeaten rolled through a pair of matches Thursday night at McMinnville Church of God, beating McMinnville Church of God 25-9, 25-20 before closing the night with a 25-15, 25-22 victory over Westwood Church of Christ. The sweep pushed the veterans to 6-0, giving them a two-match cushion atop the Church League Volleyball standings.
Old Testament Athletes looked every bit like the league's measuring stick throughout the night. Against McMinnville Church of God, the team's trademark defense turned long rallies into points while crisp passing and efficient offense led to a dominant opening set. McMinnville settled in during the second set, but the league leaders never let the momentum swing.
A few hours later came another challenge from Westwood Church of Christ, a team many considered one of the preseason favorites. Once again, Old Testament Athletes answered every run. Westwood kept the second set competitive, but the veteran squad closed the door late to remain perfect through six matches.
The night's only three-set battle belonged to Covenant Fellowship Church, which earned its second victory of the season by holding off Called to Serve 25-15, 20-25 and 15-12. After controlling the opening set, Covenant watched Called to Serve respond to even the match before regrouping in the decisive third set.
Rock Island Church of Christ also kept its unbeaten record intact, sweeping Safe Harbor Church of God 25-7 and 25-18. The victory moved Rock Island to 4-0, keeping the team within striking distance of first place heading into another busy week of action.
