Boyd’s stifling defense was again on display Thursday night in another big win for the Lady Broncos.
There was no shortage of drama in the elementary girls basketball league Thursday night, even if the top team in the county made winning look as easy as ever.
Irving College and Hickory Creek delivered a defensive battle that came down to the final minutes, with Hadlee Green providing the winning basket in an 11-9 victory for the Lady Tigers. Meanwhile, Boyd continued its unbeaten march with a 38-1 blowout of West, Centertown strengthened its place among the contenders with a 27-9 victory over Eastside and Bobby Ray survived a tense finish to edge Morrison 6-5.
The victories left Boyd unbeaten at 7-0, with Centertown at 7-1 and Irving College at 6-1 continuing to chase the Lady Broncos.
The closest battle came at Hickory Creek, where two programs with a long history of competing against each other renewed their elementary rivalry. Irving College and Hickory Creek were once regular opponents in District 1, and Thursday's matchup had all the makings of another classic between the former district foes.
The Lady Tigers established an early advantage, leading 4-1 after the opening quarter, but Hickory Creek refused to let the visitors get comfortable.
The Lady Hawks chipped away at the deficit in the second quarter, trimming Irving College's lead to 6-5 by halftime. The teams continued trading baskets after the break, with Kimber Lowe providing a spark for Hickory Creek as the Lady Hawks finally caught the visitors. By the end of the third quarter, the game was tied 9-9.
What followed was an absolute grind. Both defenses took control in the fourth quarter, making every possession feel like it could determine the outcome. Neither team was willing to give up an easy basket, and points became nearly impossible to find.
Willow Hertwig finally broke through.
The Irving College standout got a perfect feed from Hadlee Green and delivered a basket that proved to be the difference, putting the Lady Tigers ahead 11-9. Irving College's defense made sure the lead held up, shutting out Hickory Creek over the final period to secure a crucial road victory.
Sophia Stubblefield finished with four points for the Lady Tiger team lead. Hertwig, Green and Amaya Morrison added two points and Preston Wilcher contributed one. Lowe led Hickory Creek with four points, while Hattie Scott scored three and Blakely Martin added two.
While Irving College had to fight until the final buzzer, Boyd left little doubt about the outcome of its matchup against West.
The Lady Broncos overwhelmed the Lady Wizards from the opening tip, racing to a 19-0 first-quarter lead on their way to a another blowout victory.
Skylyn Wright was at the center of Boyd's early offensive explosion, scoring a game-high 11 points. Wright put an exclamation point on the opening period by knocking down a 3-pointer, capping a quarter in which the Lady Broncos nearly scored 20 points while holding West scoreless.
Boyd's defense never gave the Lady Wizards an opportunity to settle into the game.
The Lady Broncos led 25-0 at halftime and continued controlling the action after the break. West finally avoided the shutout in the third quarter when Itzel Cardenas-Lopez connected on a free throw, accounting for the Lady Wizards' only point of the night.
Juliette Ferguson provided another offensive weapon for Boyd, finishing with nine points. Ferguson closed the game with a 3-pointer, giving the Lady Broncos a fitting finish to another dominant performance.
Oly Cathcart added six points, while Kayla Brewer and Britta Burger scored four apiece. Adrianna Helton and Kenna Brewer rounded out the scoring with two each.
The Lady Broncos have been the team everyone is chasing throughout the season, but Centertown is doing everything it can to remain within striking distance.
The Lady Warriors put together another impressive performance Thursday, riding a scoring explosion from Lynlee Taylor to a 27-9 victory over Eastside.
Taylor was a scoring machine from the opening tip, attacking the basket and helping Centertown establish an early lead it would never relinquish. The Lady Warriors led 7-1 after the first quarter before turning the second period into a runaway.
Chloe Melton got rolling with a pair of baskets, providing a second scoring threat alongside Taylor as Centertown continued pulling away. Camilla Lopez added two free throws in the closing moments of the half, sending the Lady Warriors into the break with a commanding 19-1 advantage.
Taylor finished with a game-high 15 points, accounting for more than half of Centertown's offensive production. Melton added eight points, including two more layups in the fourth quarter to put the finishing touches on the victory. Arie Shehane and Lopez scored two apiece.
Eastside struggled to get anything going offensively in the opening half, but the Lady Bulldogs continued battling after the break. Mia Rodriguez finished with four points, while Elizabeth Grigg provided a late spark by scoring all four of her points in the fourth quarter. Ada Crouch added one.
Bobby Ray didn't need an offensive explosion to earn its latest victory. The Lady Stars just needed to find a way to survive.
In a game where baskets were scarce and every point mattered, Bobby Ray held off Morrison 6-5 to claim its second victory of the week.
The Lady Stars established a 2-0 lead after the opening quarter and maintained a slim 4-2 advantage at halftime. Bobby Ray added another basket in the third period to stretch its lead to 6-2, but Morrison wasn't ready to surrender.
The Lady Eagles made their final push in the fourth quarter, with Jullianna Hawkins scoring a basket to bring Morrison within a single point. Bobby Ray had opportunities to create some breathing room at the free-throw line, but six missed fourth-quarter attempts kept the door open for the Lady Eagles.
The Stars couldn't add to their lead, but their defense did enough to protect it. Morrison managed three points in the final period, yet Bobby Ray held on for the narrow victory.
Nyla Millraney, Emmalyn Taylor and Avery Dodson scored two points apiece for Bobby Ray. Phoebe Smith and Hawkins each finished with two points for Morrison, while Piper Huff added one.
