Irving College wins OT thriller, West stays unbeaten

Nathaniel Johnson sinks the game-winning free throw for Irving College.

Some games are decided long before the final buzzer. Others are destined to become instant classics.

Irving College and Hickory Creek delivered the latter Thursday night, battling through wild momentum swings, a second-half comeback and a dramatic finish before the Tigers escaped with a 26-25 overtime victory on the road.

Nathaneel Johnson was the hero in extra time, providing the only point when he stepped to the line with 29.5 seconds remaining and calmly knocked down a shot that proved to be the difference. Irving College made that lone point stand up, escaping with a victory in one of the most dramatic games of the elementary season.

Irving College had to earn every bit of its fourth victory of the season.

Hickory Creek looked ready to control the game early by establishing Po Haywood on the block. The Hawks repeatedly attacked Irving College's 2-3 zone with high-low passing, finding their big man in scoring position around the basket.

Haywood was nearly unstoppable in the opening half, scoring 10 points as Hickory Creek built a 14-6 advantage at the break. The Hawks appeared to have the formula for success, feeding their post presence and forcing the Tigers to find answers against their defense.

Whatever adjustments Irving College made at halftime worked immediately.

The Tigers came storming out of the locker room, with True Lusk leading a furious comeback. Lusk scored seven points in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer, as Irving College ripped off a 12-2 run to erase the eight-point deficit and take an 18-16 lead into the fourth. Ryan Yates connected on a 3-pointer during the rally that got the Tigers out in front.

The Tigers carried their momentum into the fourth quarter, building an advantage and putting themselves in position to steal a crucial road victory. But the Hawks weren't finished.

Noah Mallette connected on a 3-pointer to bring Hickory Creek within striking distance, setting the stage for Haywood to deliver another big basket. With 49 seconds remaining, Haywood scored inside to tie the game and give the Hawks new life.

Neither team could find the winning basket in the closing seconds, sending the contest to overtime tied at 25.

After all the offensive fireworks and momentum swings, the extra period came down to a single free throw. Johnson’s crucial make at the charity stripe - one of three FTs he hit off the bench for the Tigers in the second half - was the difference in a battle for the ages.

Lusk led the Tigers with 11 points, followed by Yates added eight. Johnson finished with five and Weston Walker scored two points.

Haywood was sensational for Hickory Creek, finishing with a game-high 16 points. Mallette added five, while Asher Mathis and Beckett Butler scored two apiece.

Irving College improved to 4-3, moving ahead of the Hawks in the standings. Hickory Creek fell to 4-4 after dropping its third straight game.

Cam Chadwell was on fire for the Wizards Thursday night at Boyd.

It was the highlight of a busy night in Warren County's elementary boys basketball league, which also saw West remain undefeated with a 38-10 victory over Boyd, Morrison continue its surge with a 38-23 win over Bobby Ray and Centertown overwhelm Eastside 44-9.

While the Tigers and Hawks were trading blows in a classic, the West Wizards were busy taking care of business.

The unbeaten Wizards didn't score for the first five minutes against Boyd, but once the lid finally came off the basket, West wasted little time turning the game into another runaway.

West closed the opening quarter with 10 unanswered points, then added another 10 in the second to build a commanding 20-2 halftime lead. The Wizards never let up, cruising to a 38-10 victory that improved their record to 7-0.

Cam Chadwell once again led the way, pouring in 19 points while continuing to balance his scoring ability with his role as West's primary facilitator.

Chadwell has been one of the league's most consistent offensive weapons all season, capable of creating his own shot while also making sure his teammates get opportunities. Thursday was another example of the impact he can make when the Wizards get rolling.

Princeton Scott provided an equally important spark, scoring a season-high 11 points to reach double figures for the first time.

Scott has already established himself as one of the league's most disruptive defenders, routinely making life miserable for opposing ballhandlers. Against Boyd, he added another dimension to his game by becoming a major offensive catalyst.

The combination of Chadwell's production, Scott's scoring and West's relentless defensive pressure proved overwhelming for the Broncos.

Malik Ellis, Byron Keyes, DJ Ramirez and Preston Keyes each added two points as the Wizards continued spreading opportunities throughout their lineup.

Heath Judkins led Boyd with four points, while Jase Burger, Jax Burger and Sailor Curtis scored two apiece.

Boyd fell to 2-5, while West moved another step closer to completing an unbeaten run through the county schedule.

Morrison is putting together a run of its own.

The Eagles entered last week struggling to find consistency, but a dramatic upset of Centertown seems to have changed their trajectory. Morrison followed that victory with a blowout of Eastside on Monday, then made it three straight wins Thursday with a 38-23 victory over Bobby Ray.

Trey Hawkins continued his offensive tear, pouring in 19 points to lead the Eagles.

Morrison needed his scoring early after Bobby Ray came out firing. The Stars actually led 13-10 after the first quarter, putting the Eagles in an unfamiliar position following their dominant performance against Eastside earlier in the week.

Morrison responded by tightening things up defensively, holding Bobby Ray to just two points in the second quarter. The Eagles took a slim 16-15 advantage into halftime before delivering their decisive surge after the break.

Morrison outscored Bobby Ray 13-6 in the third quarter, stretching its lead to 29-21. The Eagles finished the job with a 9-2 fourth quarter, turning a competitive first half into a comfortable 15-point victory.

Hawkins' 19 points gave him 34 across Morrison's two victories this week, continuing a remarkable offensive stretch for the Eagle standout.

Sawyer McCormick added five points, while James Starkey and Luke Harris scored four apiece. Mason Kuehnhold and Greyson Hawkins contributed three each.

Jayden Terry led Bobby Ray with 10 points, while River Green added seven. Evan Reilly finished with four and McKenley Holland scored two.

The Eagles improved to 4-4, climbing back to .500 after opening the season 1-4. Bobby Ray dropped to 0-7.

Centertown made sure there would be no suspense in its trip to Eastside.

The Warriors erupted for 22 points in the opening quarter, building a 22-3 advantage before rolling to a 44-9 victory over the Bulldogs.

Eastside's Grayson Shaffer knocked down a 3-pointer in the first quarter, but it did little to slow a Centertown offense that was scoring from seemingly everywhere.

The Warriors led 28-5 at halftime and continued pulling away in the third quarter, outscoring Eastside 12-4 before holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the final period.

Easton Parker and Colt Bratcher led Centertown with 10 points apiece, while Noah Simpson added eight.

Hudson Dunn chipped in six points, giving the Warriors another productive offensive option. Christian Simpson, Remington Adcock, Maddux Underhill, Knox Stiles and Greyson Eubanks each scored two.

The balanced scoring was another encouraging sign for Centertown, which has leaned heavily on Bratcher and Eubanks throughout the season but continues developing other players capable of making an impact.

Shaffer led Eastside with five points, while Kaden Tate added four.

Centertown improved to 6-2, keeping the Warriors firmly in the championship conversation behind unbeaten West and one-loss Dibrell. Eastside fell to 0-7.
