There was no late-game drama needed this time. Warren County just kept doing what has worked throughout its five-game winning streak - finding a way to get the job done.
After going to penalty kicks to beat Franklin County and a goal in the final seven minutes to knock off Tullahoma last week, the Lady Pioneers took control much earlier Tuesday. Ashlyn Bailey and Noelle Bratcher both blasted home first-half goals and Warren County's defense did the rest in a 2-0 district victory over Coffee County.
The win pushed Warren County to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in district play while extending its winning streak to five. Even more impressive, freshman keeper Kinsley Simpson and the Lady Pioneer defense recorded their third consecutive shutout.
There wasn't one spectacular moment that decided the rivalry matchup. Instead, Warren County controlled long stretches of possession, kept creating chances and continued leaning on a defense that has become its calling card. It fit the same tone coach Todd Willmore has stressed throughout the team's hot streak - the Lady Pioneers continue finding ways to get things done.
Warren County spent most of the opening minutes camped in Coffee County territory, peppering keeper Kayda Ferrell with opportunities while keeping the Lady Raiders from generating much in transition. Coffee County's dangerous Lilly Matherne, who entered the night with 14 goals, found little room to operate against a Warren County defense that made sure there were always bodies around her.
The Lady Pioneers' constant pressure finally paid off midway through the first half.
Bratcher sent a corner toward the top of the box, where Emory MacDonald was able to settle the ball. Bailey came charging into the play from deep and unloaded from outside the 18-yard box, ripping a shot past Ferrell to give Warren County a 1-0 advantage.
It was Bailey's first goal of the season and made the sophomore the sixth different Lady Pioneer to score through the team's first seven matches.
Warren County didn't back off.
Bratcher continued firing away from seemingly anywhere within striking distance, forcing Ferrell into multiple saves. The Lady Pioneers nearly doubled their lead when a dangerous chance rattled off the frame, but the missed opportunity didn't matter for long.
With 6:18 remaining before halftime, Bratcher stood over a direct kick from roughly 30 yards out. For somebody with Bratcher's leg, that was close enough.
The junior sent a towering strike toward goal and over Ferrell for her team-leading fifth goal of the season, giving Warren County a 2-0 lead it would carry into halftime.
It was another big moment for Bratcher, who has been on a tear during Warren County's winning streak. She scored all three goals in the district victory at Lincoln County and entered Tuesday already leading Warren County with four goals.
The Lady Pioneers had plenty of chances to turn the second half into a rout.
Gisell Escamilla nearly made it 3-0 moments after the break and Izzy Rodriguez put another attempt on frame as Warren County immediately went back on the attack. Coffee County continued to get strong work from Ferrell, who made several quality saves throughout the night to keep the Lady Raiders within striking distance.
Senior Addi Steakley, a standout throughout the match, also probably left wondering what she had to do to get one to fall. The senior had multiple near misses, including shots clanging off the post in each half, as Warren County continued pushing forward instead of simply sitting on its two-goal advantage.
Coffee County never found the answer at the other end.
Maci McBride, Addisyn Watson, Kacey Mitchell and Summer Wanamaker continued cleaning up attacks in front of Simpson, with Bailey also dropping back to provide help. Time after time, one Lady Pioneer would slow down a Coffee County push and another would arrive to finish it off.
It resulted in another relatively quiet night for Simpson, which is about the biggest compliment possible for the group playing in front of her.
The freshman keeper has now been part of three consecutive shutouts. Warren County hasn't surrendered a goal since Lincoln County scored in the first half of the Lady Pioneers' 3-1 victory Aug. 27.
It’s also the fourth shutout in the five-game winning streak as Warren County also blanked Smyrna 4-0 before topping the Falcons two weeks ago.
Warren County will take its streak on the road Thursday when the Lady Pioneers travel to Shelbyville Central for another district matchup at 7 p.m.
Ashlyn Bailey shows off the WCSA Player of the Game chain after starring in the Lady Pioneers’ 2-0 shutout of Coffee County Tuesday night at home.
