Lady Broncos move to 4-0, Morrison boys win big

Boyd’s girls team gathers in the locker room before picking up their fourth straight win Thursday night in elementary play.

When Pioneer football moved its game up one night, it caused a cascading effect for many schools and their schedules. Boyd was the lone school to decide to keep everything running as is Thursday and it’s probably no secret why.

The Lady Broncos have been on a hot streak and didn’t want anything disrupting their rhythm. Morrison couldn’t Thursday night at JK Stanley Gymnasium.

Boyd improved to a league-best 4-0 by topping the Lady Eagles 29-6 behind another impressive team effort. Morrison answered in the boys game, racing out to a huge early lead and holding off the Broncos 35-21 to pick up its first victory of the season.

The other two matchups originally scheduled for Thursday were moved to later in the season. Centertown will travel to Irving College Oct. 20, while Dibrell’s trip to West has been rescheduled for Nov. 5.

Sky Wright continued to fuel the Lady Broncos with a game-best 13 points, while Juliette Ferguson continued her hot start with a season-best nine. On the other end, Boyd’s nearly impenetrable defense showed up again at home.

Julliana Hawkins got the Lady Eagles on the board in the first quarter, but Morrison wouldn’t score again until the fourth as Boyd pressured passing lanes, cleaned the glass and kept flooding the court with rugged defenders.

It was another example of the depth that has helped Boyd emerge as the league’s lone 4-0 team. Wright provided the scoring punch at the top, Ferguson continued to produce and the Lady Broncos never gave Morrison enough clean looks to make a run.

Morrison eventually broke through with buckets from Aubree White and Oakley Morris in the fourth, but Oly Cathcart helped cap the victory for Boyd with a 3-pointer in the final 10 minutes.

Cathcart finished with five points, while Kayla Brewer rounded out the scoring with two for the home team.

While the elementary league will take next week off for fall break for Warren County schools, Boyd - the league’s lone private school - will continue playing. The Lady Broncos will host Upper Cumberland Tuesday, Oct. 6 before traveling to face Cannon South Thursday.

Morrison made sure its final game before fall break was the one that put the Eagles in the win column.

The Eagles soared out to a 22-2 lead Thursday night at JK Stanley Gymnasium and never surrendered the advantage, beating Boyd 35-21 to improve to 1-2.

Sawyer McCormick was at the center of Morrison’s early explosion. The Eagles’ point guard scored all eight of his points in the first quarter as Morrison unleashed its offense at full force and quickly put the Broncos in a deep hole.

Boyd eventually started finding some bright spots before the night was over. Heath Judkins, the Broncos’ big man, started making his presence felt inside, while lead guard Jax Burger continued to show he doesn’t mind battling when things get tough.

The Broncos were able to cut the deficit to 24-9 by halftime, but Morrison quickly answered. The Eagles came back with a 10-4 surge in the third quarter to regain complete control.

Boyd kept fighting until the end, closing the game on an 8-1 run, but the huge early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Trey Hawkins led Morrison with nine points, while McCormick and James Starkey scored eight apiece. Anderson Caten and Greyson Hawkins added four each, while Ashton White and Mason Kuehnhold finished with one apiece.

Judkins led Boyd with nine points, Burger added seven, Judson Smith scored three and Sailor Curtis finished with two.

The victory sends Morrison into the break at 1-2, while Boyd drops to 1-3.
