Student cited to court in ‘Cat in the Hat’ threat

According to a press release by Warren County Sheriff’s Office, a student has been identified following a “Cat in the Hat” threat investigation.

“A Warren County High School student was served with a juvenile petition Tuesday afternoon following an extensive investigation into a reported online threat involving an AI-generated image of the “Cat in the Hat.” The juvenile has been charged with Making Threats of Mass Violence on School Property.

“The investigation was conducted jointly by agents with Homeland Security Investigations, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, and the McMinnville Police Department.

“The “Cat in the Hat” trend involves AI-generated videos and images depicting the Dr. Seuss character appearing to lurk outside homes, schools, and other locations. These images can be disturbing and may be perceived as threatening. The trend has become widespread across Tennessee, the United States, and other countries.

“While these incidents may be part of what is commonly referred to as a “hoax,” law enforcement agencies will take every threat seriously. Individuals who create, post, or share threatening content may face criminal or juvenile charges and prosecution.

“Sheriff Matheny echoes the concerns expressed by Director of Schools Dr. Grant Swallows and encourages parents and guardians to speak with their children about the seriousness and potential consequences of creating, posting, sharing, or participating in threatening content online.

“Sheriff Matheny also wants to reassure students, parents, teachers, and school staff that law enforcement agencies throughout Warren County and across the state will continue working together to investigate threats and take every necessary step to help keep our schools safe.

“This investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges are expected.”
