Knoxville officer charged with abuse of a corpse

An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment of a former Knoxville police officer.

In June, at the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen, TBI agents began investigating allegations involving Shigeki Nagamoto, 38, who was employed by the Knoxville Police Department at the time. During the investigation, agents gathered evidence indicating that in December 2024, while at the scene of a reported death, Nagamato exposed and inappropriately touched part of a deceased woman’s body.

The Knox County Grandy Jury returned an indictment charging Nagamoto with one count of Abuse of a Corpse. He turned himself in and was booked into the Knox County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

The charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct, not evidence. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.
