J.C. Petit Jr. contacted the Warren County Way, within hours of being locked out of the compactor for non-payment of fees and alerting your source for local news.
“They must have read your article, because Robert Bratcher called my attorney,” Petit stated. “He asked my attorney if he’d received the letter. My attorney said, ‘Yes, I received it Friday.’ I wasn’t aware of that. Robert is suggesting that I pay the dumpster fees, and my attorney is suggesting that I pay. So, that’s what I’m going to do.”
Petit says his decision to pay isn’t based on a requirement in the lease to do so. It’s based on a clause that allows the county to increase his rent.
“I didn’t even know that this clause existed. They don’t have to roll over month-to-month lease and keep my rent the same. They can double my rent. My attorney says page 26, section 8. I looked at it and read it. Sure enough, it’s in there.”
Petit says he wasn’t worried about being locked out of the dumpster, but he does fear a rent hike out of retaliation that would put him out of business.
