Winning in the classroom

WCHS Student-Athletes Earn Top TSSAA Academic Honors

The Following is a press release from Warren County High School

McMinnville, Tenn. – While championships and victories are often measured on the field and court, Warren County High School student-athletes continue to prove that some of their greatest achievements happen in the classroom.

For the 2025-2026 school year, both the Lady Pioneer basketball team and Pioneer baseball team earned prestigious Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Academic Achievement Awards, recognizing their commitment to excellence both academically and athletically.

The Lady Pioneers earned the TSSAA Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Award, the highest team academic honor presented by the association. The award recognizes teams that achieve a collective grade point average between 3.25 and 4.00, and the Lady Pioneers posted an outstanding 3.76 team GPA.

Individual success matched the team's remarkable accomplishment. Seventeen of the team's student-athletes earned the TSSAA Student-Athlete Award of Merit by maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA, and nine players finished the year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

"To say that I'm beyond proud of the girls for these academic achievements is a massive understatement," said Lady Pioneer Basketball Head Coach Kyle Turnham. "These young ladies truly epitomize the student-athlete concept. Their performances in the classroom, which are staggering, paired with their athletic successes, posting just the fourth winning season in the past 26 years, speak volumes about the character of the girls and the culture of our program."

The Pioneer baseball team also continued a remarkable tradition of academic excellence by earning the TSSAA Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award after finishing the year with a 3.21 team GPA.

Seventeen baseball players also earned individual TSSAA Student-Athlete Awards of Merit for maintaining GPAs of 3.5 or higher.

According to Pioneer Baseball Head Coach Phillip King, the recognition reflects a long-standing commitment to academics within the program.

"We have been extremely blessed in my time here at Warren County to not only have some excellent baseball players and teams, but we also have had student-athletes who have made a commitment to excel in the classroom," King said. "For seven years in a row, our teams have been awarded both the TSSAA Award for Academic Achievement and the American Baseball Coaches Association Academic Excellence Team Award."

King says academics are celebrated just as enthusiastically as championships.

"In our locker room we have a dedicated wall to display our team's academic achievements. We believe it's just as important to celebrate academic accomplishments in the same fashion that we do team championships," he said. "Obviously, we would love for all of our players to continue playing baseball at the next level, but playing eventually comes to an end for everyone. A strong academic foundation gives our student-athletes the opportunity to achieve whatever goals they choose to pursue beyond athletics."

Together, the accomplishments of both programs highlight Warren County High School's commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes who excel in competition, in the classroom, and in their future pursuits.
