Winners galore in Church League Volleyball

When tense battles go down to the wire and both teams still emerge smiling, you know there really are no losers in Church League volleyball. But there are winners at the end of the night and, so far, nobody is doing it better than the Old Testament Athletes.

The league's leading team improved to 4-0 Tuesday night, sweeping Covenant Fellowship Church 25-17 and 25-13. The Cross Denominators also stayed perfect at 3-0 with a three-set win over Safe Harbor Church of God, while Rock Island Church of Christ ended the night by moving to 3-0 as well with a win over Westwood Church of Christ.

In between, the Moore brothers helped McMinnville Church of God win a three-set thriller over Rolling Acres BIC to improve to 3-1.

The Old Testament Athletes, who have two more battles on deck Thursday, have passed every test so far with flying colors. While Covenant came into Tuesday's match reeling after a few close losses, nobody would've been surprised if the fast, athletic bunch made it a match against the league's top team.

Instead, it was business as usual as the Old Testament Athletes played their familiar winning style: good sets, solid hits, few missed serves and highlight plays on the defensive end. It was another clinic from the group that entered the league with some of the most experience and has yet to show a crack in its defensive armor.

The Cross Denominators looked like they were going to take an easy forfeit win when Safe Harbor arrived without enough players to field a team, but a pickup squad was formed and the undefeated record was put to the test.

Without team captain Holly Palombo and several defensive aces, the Cross Denominators still found a way to prevail, beating Safe Harbor 25-13, 19-25 and 15-12.

By the end of the night, Rock Island sliced into the ranks of the undefeated teams, winning a battle of 2-0 squads against Westwood 25-15 and 25-16.

McMinnville Church of God, meanwhile, continued its climb up the standings by winning its third straight match, beating Rolling Acres 25-12, 17-25 and 15-12.

After losing on opening night, the team has slowly but surely built itself into a solid contender, one that now sits alone in fourth place at 3-1.

Cameron Moore and Josh Moore are helping the cause every time out. The duo can do a little bit of everything, combining Cameron's lightning-quick speed in the back row with Josh's ability to hammer anything at the net.

Mixing in perfect sets from Anniston Page and great defense from Halle Lowe, the team has found its groove and is waiting for a chance to start taking down the top three.

McMinnville Church of God gets its shot Thursday when it opens the night against the Old Testament Athletes at 5:30 p.m. The Old Testament Athletes will also wrap up the evening with a matchup against Westwood Church of Christ at 8:30 p.m.

Other matchups include Covenant Fellowship Church vs. Called to Serve at 6:30 p.m. and Rock Island Church of Christ vs. Safe Harbor Church of God at 7:30 p.m.
