West continues unbeaten run

West has spent the opening weeks of the elementary basketball season running opponents out of the gym. Monday night, the Wizards faced another undefeated team and showed that even a well-prepared opponent can have trouble keeping up with their relentless pressure.

The Wizards improved to 5-0 with a convincing 36-13 victory over Irving College at Bobby Ray Elementary's Spc. Jeremy L. Brown Gymnasium, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season and strengthening West's position as the team to beat in Warren County's 3-5 grade league.

Irving College entered the matchup unbeaten and battled tested, having already survived close games against Morrison and Bobby Ray. The Tigers had shown they could execute in tight situations, but West presented a different challenge with its combination of speed, aggressive defense and dominance on the offensive glass.

For much of the opening quarter, Irving College appeared capable of slowing down the Wizards.

The Tigers packed the paint with a zone defense, daring West to beat them from the perimeter rather than allowing easy opportunities around the basket. Irving College also came prepared with a press break to mitigate West's full-court pressure, finding occasional openings against the Wizards' trapping defense.

True Lusk provided Irving College's first basket and Ryan Yates knocked down a jumper to make it 5-4 late in the opening period. The Tigers were getting defensive stops and forcing West into some difficult shots, but the Wizards were creating too many additional possessions with their offensive rebounding.

It didn't take long for the pressure to catch up with Irving College.

West closed the first quarter with a 7-0 run, turning a one-point advantage into a 12-4 lead. Malik Ellis provided an important lift with his work on the offensive glass while Byron Keyes continued establishing himself as a difficult matchup around the basket.

The Wizards' pressure was just as effective in the half court as it was on full-court possessions. Cam Chadwell and Princeton Scott were constantly disrupting passing lanes, forcing the Tigers to make quick decisions and turning loose balls into transition opportunities.

Irving College continued battling through the second quarter, finding some success attacking the offensive glass and getting into the paint. West also had to make adjustments when Scott encountered foul trouble, but the Tigers couldn't consistently capitalize on their opportunities.

The Wizards carried a 16-6 lead into halftime, with Irving College still hoping to make it a competitive fourth-quarter game.

Lusk opened the second half with a basket to cut the deficit to eight, but West answered by finding different ways to attack Irving College's zone. Scott began setting screens to free Chadwell for opportunities around the basket while Ellis showed his ability to knock down jumpers when the Tigers concentrated on protecting the paint.

West stretched its advantage to 22-9 by the end of the third quarter before putting the game away with a dominant fourth quarter.

Chadwell finished with a game-high 14 points, continuing to establish himself as one of the league's most dynamic guards. The West floor general controlled the pace, attacked in transition and consistently put pressure on Irving College's defense.

Scott added nine points, but his defensive activity was every bit as important. The quick-handed guard created problems for Irving College throughout the night, jumping passing lanes and making it difficult for the Tigers to settle into their offense. His speed also made him a constant threat whenever West forced a turnover.

Ellis finished with seven points in one of his strongest all-around performances of the season. He was active on the glass, helped create turnovers and delivered several sharp passes to teammates running ahead of the defense. His perimeter shooting also gave West another weapon when Irving College tried to take away the paint.

Keyes added six points while continuing to make his presence felt around the basket. The Wizards' chairman of the boards provided second-chance opportunities, protected the rim and showed the versatility to handle the basketball in transition.

Yates led Irving College with five points while Lusk finished with four. Weston Walker and Gunner Powers added two apiece.

Judkins powers Boyd past Eastside

Heath Judkins delivered a dominant offensive performance Monday, scoring 18 points to lead Boyd to a 26-16 victory over Eastside.

The big man in the middle was an unstoppable force against the Bulldogs, battling for position and scoring at will when the Broncos got the ball in the paint. Sailor Curtis also had a breakout performance, getting a season-high six points while Jax Burger finished with two.

Eastside was led by a trio of four-point scorers as Kaden Martin, Grayson Shaffer and Cain Rodriguez paced the Bulldogs. Matthias Wilcher and Marcus Martin added two points apiece.

Dibrell grinds out win over Morrison

Dibrell has made a habit of winning games with toughness and defensive effort, and the Wildcats needed both Monday to escape Morrison with an 18-15 victory.

Jeb Culwell provided the offensive spark, scoring 11 points as he continues to be the focal point of the Wildcat offense. Owen Willis, River Rice and Juan Garcia each scored two while Mason Kieffer added one.

Morrison refused to go away, keeping the game close behind seven points from Trey Hawkins and four from James Starkey. Luke Harris and Jarrett Moore each contributed two points.

The Wildcats improved to 5-1, continuing their climb after an opening-game loss to Centertown. Morrison fell to 1-4, though the Eagles showed they could challenge one of the league's top teams.

Haywood leads Hickory Creek over Bobby Ray

Po Haywood was the difference for Hickory Creek on Monday, scoring 12 points to lead the Hawks to a 26-18 victory over Bobby Ray.

Haywood was particularly effective in the fourth quarter, pouring in eight points as the Hawks had to survive a big test from the Stars on their home court. Evan Parajuli added four points, Asher Mathis and Beckett Butler scored three each and Noah Mallett and Easton Underhill finished with two apiece.

Bobby Ray continued to show improvement offensively, getting eight points from Adam Anderson and four from Jayden Terry. Karim Garen, Evan Reilly and Matteo Fajardo added two points each.
