Winning streak snapped
The WCMS Lady Pioneers lost on the road at Algood Monday, snapping a six-match winning streak.
Warren County Middle School saw its six-match winning streak come to an end Monday, but Algood had to fight until the final points to make it happen.
The Lady Pioneers won the opening set before dropping two straight nail-biters, falling 21-25, 25-23, 15-13 on the road. The loss dropped Warren County to 9-3 overall and 6-3 in district, keeping the group near the top but without a sweep of the season series.
"Tonight was a tough loss for both teams," said coach Bethany Mesaros, also referring to JV’s defeat. "We were making silly mistakes and ultimately that's what caught up to us in the end. Algood had a scrappy defense and they were not letting balls drop, so finding the open spots was more difficult than the teams we have played so far."
Warren County did get a boost from the return of libero Lyvia Wilson, who missed last Friday’s win over Coffee county with a back injury. Wilson immediately returned to her role anchoring the Lady Pioneer defense, piling up a team-high 14 digs while adding an ace.
She had plenty of help on the back row. Ellie Dixon and Maebry Yates each recorded 10 digs, while Fallon Youngblood added six.
Youngblood also provided an early spark from the service line with three aces and continued directing the WCMS attack with a team-high 13 assists.
Offensively, Warren County showed plenty of balance. Dixon, Khloe Howell and Yates each finished with six kills, while Howell also recorded a block. Emma Boon added six assists and a kill.
Ultimately, the Lady Pioneers couldn't find the final few points against an Algood defense that continued to extend rallies. The Lady Pioneers won't have much time to dwell on the loss.
"We are going to bounce back tomorrow and come out strong against Prescott," said Mesaros.
The road match in Cookeville is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
