WCMS Soccer rolls to 2-0 start
Brent Carden photo - It was high-fives all around at Avery Trace Monday as LB Guthrie, right, scored three goals in a 7-0 rout.
The WCMS Lady Pioneers have yet to play a home match this season, but they certainly look comfortable on the road.
Warren County improved to 2-0 Tuesday night with an offensive explosion, rolling to a 7-0 victory at Avery Trace and giving second-year coach Sally Willmore and her squad a perfect start through the opening two matches.
LB Guthrie led the scoring barrage with a hat trick, finding the back of the net three times for the Lady Pioneers. Emma Kate Lippe, Abigail Laxson, AnnaLee Simpson and Jensi Griffith joined the fun with goals as Warren County turned its second road trip into a runaway.
For Willmore, the dominant victory was even sweeter because it opened district play.
"It's pretty exciting to start district play off like that," said Willmore. "Hopefully, it continues."
There is certainly plenty of momentum to build on.
The Lady Pioneers opened their season last Friday by battling through miserable conditions at Coffee County, leaving a rain-soaked field with a 3-2 victory. Lippe, Finley MacDonald and Guthrie supplied the goals for Warren County in the opener. An own goal helped tighten the score and added a little late drama, but WCMS was able to finish off the road win.
It was not originally supposed to be the Lady Pioneers' first match. Warren County had a potential home debut wiped away by rain last Thursday, forcing the team to wait a little longer before getting on the field.
Since then, WCMS has made up for lost time in a hurry. The road tour isn't quite finished yet. Warren County will travel to face Upperman Friday before finally getting the opportunity to play in front of its home crowd next week.
The Lady Pioneers are scheduled to host Tullahoma Monday, Aug. 17 before welcoming Algood Friday, Aug. 21.
If the first two matches are any indication, WCMS should have plenty of momentum waiting for it when it finally comes home.
