Tryouts set as Lady Pioneers seek another winning season
The foundation for another turnaround season will begin forming Friday afternoon at Charlie Dalton Gym.
The Warren County High School Lady Pioneers will hold tryouts for the 2026-27 season Friday, May 22 from 12-2 p.m. at Charlie Dalton Gym. Tryouts are open to all girls entering grades 9-12 at WCHS next school year as coach Kyle Turnham enters his third season leading the program.
Momentum is building around the Lady Pioneers after Warren County took a major step forward last winter, finishing 14-12 overall and securing just the program’s fourth winning season in the last 26 years. The Lady Pioneers also showed they could compete with anybody in District 9-4A, highlighted by a season sweep of Shelbyville and a dramatic Senior Night victory over Lincoln County when Trinity Reynolds knocked down a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute.
Reynolds, a two-time all-district selection who recently signed with LaGrange College, leaves behind a major void. Still, Warren County returns several pieces that could help the Lady Pioneers continue climbing this winter.
Rising junior Brynlee Chisam is coming off an all-district campaign after emerging as one of Warren County’s toughest players on both ends of the floor. Chisam averaged 9.32 points per game while becoming a key defensive presence in many of the team’s biggest wins. She delivered the game-winning 3-pointer in overtime during Warren County’s district road win at Shelbyville Jan. 23 and also made several momentum-shifting defensive plays late in the upset victory over Lincoln County.
Soon-to-be senior Addison Steakley also earned postseason recognition after being named to the district all-defensive team. Steakley averaged 8.1 points per game and reached double figures 11 times, including a 20-point outing with six 3-pointers in a win over Franklin County Dec. 9. Her defensive pressure and ability to create turnovers became a major spark for the Lady Pioneers throughout district play.
Warren County could also get major leaps from rising senior Aubrey Oleksik and rising junior Cortlyn Porter after both gained valuable experience as starters last season.
Turnham’s willingness to trust young players may also continue paying dividends. Last year, the Lady Pioneers selected 15 freshmen during tryouts, building a youthful core. With many of those players now having the opportunity to return, Warren County hopes Friday’s tryout can help launch another step forward for the program.
