Trio of Broncos work out at Welch College
Boyd basketball got an early taste of the next level over the weekend when three Broncos made the trip to Welch College for a workout in front of college coaches.
Senior Jordin Mitchell, junior Warren Simmons and sophomore Levi Jordan represented Boyd during the visit, getting the opportunity to go through a workout similar to what Welch players experience while also getting some exposure in front of coach Greg Fawbush and his staff.
For Boyd coach Dustin Curtis, entering his third season leading his alma mater, the experience was about more than just getting some extra work in before the season.
“I thought the guys did really well. They all were a little nervous, to be honest,” said Curtis. “Coach Fawbush put them through a workout his Welch team goes through. It was good for them to get on a college campus, in front of a college coach. We had more guys there than any other school.”
The three Broncos who made the trip could all play important roles as Curtis continues reshaping the Boyd program this winter.
Mitchell has steadily progressed throughout his high school career and flashed his potential last season despite coming off the bench for a senior-laden Bronco squad. He posted a handful of double-doubles and now enters his senior season as one of Boyd's top returning players and a player Curtis will be counting on for leadership.
Jordan doesn't have to wait for his opportunity. He made an immediate impact as a freshman last winter, emerging as one of Boyd's leading scorers. Now a sophomore, Jordan will have a chance to build on a promising debut season.
Simmons is the new face of the group. The junior is joining the Broncos this season and has already shown signs he could become an impact addition to Curtis' rotation.
While the Broncos were able to pick up pointers during Monday's workout, Curtis said he was doing some learning of his own.
“I think this will help them individually tremendously,” said Curtis. “Also, I as a coach learned some things that college coaches really look for, both on and off the floor.”
