Warren County looked ready to battle Stewarts Creek Tuesday night. The problem was the Lady Pioneers couldn't sustain it.
WCHS pushed the Lady Red Hawks to the limit in the opening set before falling 27-25, then struggled to recapture that same level of play in 25-13 and 25-11 losses as Stewarts Creek completed the 3-0 sweep.
The loss dropped Warren County to 10-12 overall and 6-7 in District 7-AAA. After winning four straight matches, the Lady Pioneers have now dropped back-to-back district contests against Lebanon and Stewarts Creek.
“We played a great first set and had every opportunity to take it,” coach Erin Blalock said. “We made a couple of execution errors and let it get away but played extremely well in the first set. Unfortunately, that same team never made it back to the court.”
“We struggled to do the little things and keep the energy level where it needed to be.”
"While the varsity couldn't mount a comeback, Warren County's JV provided one of the highlights of the night.
The Lady Pioneers trailed 20-9 in the second set but stormed back to complete a straight-set victory.
“The JV played outstanding tonight,” Blalock said. “They never gave up and capitalized on opportunities they were given.”
Blalock credited Elliana Heintz with a big performance at the net and seniors Jenna Mullins and Alyssa Boyd for continuing to provide leadership for the younger group.
“Jenna and Alyssa really kept the team up and motivated to succeed,” Blalock said. “It was really fun to watch.”
Warren County can try to get back on the right track at the Dalt Thursday night when it takes on Sparta at 6 p.m.
