Strong summer for WCMS boys

The young Pioneers are proving the heat isn’t just outside this summer. The WCMS boys are sizzling on the hardwood as well.

Warren County has put up a 4-0 start to summer ball, running through the competition in Cookeville this week. The Pioneers beat Highland Rim Academy, Allons, Algood and Cannon County, using hustle, energy and some newly added size to suffocate opponents.

“I think we are progressing well this summer - We have a bigger and longer team this year,” said coach Isaiah Grayson, who is going into his second year as WCMS coach. “We are working on playing to our size and handling pressure and making good decisions. We just had five total practices before we went to play and they did well with what we put in over those five days.”

Having a new set of twin towers has definitely helped the efforts for WCMS. Twin brothers Cooper and Weston Murphy, stars for the Morrison Eagles over the years, have moved over to play for the Pioneers as eighth graders. Blessed with guard skills and post height, their effectiveness has been immediate in the summer contests.

“The Murphy twins have been a big addition to our team. They have meshed well with  the other and give some more scoring options,” said Grayson when asked about their impact.

Returning options are seizing opportunities too. While the majority of the team’s roster moved up to the WCHS team now, key members of last year’s JV team have stepped up their play. Gus Bouldin, Brody Chisam and Colton Todd have all played good minutes in camp, while coach Grayson can also turn to a lineup that will feature Case Simpson, Tayshawn Cummings, Will Hale, Gage Woodlee, Caelab Rhoady and Bentley Lefevers this winter.

Warren County will wrap up its summer action with matchups in Cannon County next Friday, June 19.
