Pioneer of the Week, Aug 10-15
Each Sunday, The Warren County Way will be selecting a Pioneer of the Week. That honor is sponsored by R3 Logistics. Be on the lookout for the Pioneers of the Week throughout the 2026-27 school year.
Mikhail Wilcher, WCMS Footall
Every time the Pioneers take the field, they're looking to impose their will. Nothing sets the tone more than when big No. 44 starts strolling to a captain's meeting.
Mikhail Wilcher has been called a bulldozer for the Pioneers through two games this season and his impact goes well beyond the stats he's already racking up. It's more the physical presence he presents - a wrecking ball in the WCMS backfield that has to be accounted for every single play he's in.
And if he has the ball, defenders have been making one of two choices this year: Go low and hope to trip him up or just get out of his way entirely.
Wilcher, who had two TDs in the first win over DeKalb County, scored on a two-point conversion against Jasper last week while also making impacts in all three phases. He recorded a pair of sacks and recovered a critical onside kick that helped get the Pioneers rolling in the second half of their 30-14 victory.
His onside recovery came after Warren County had already successfully stolen a possession with one to open the second half. Wilcher secured the second in Jasper territory, then immediately went back to work on offense as the Pioneers marched for another touchdown and stretched their lead in an eventual blowout.
Versatility is what makes Wilcher such an important piece for a Pioneer team off to a 2-0 start. Warren County can hand him the ball and ask him to punish defenders, turn him loose after quarterbacks or count on him to make a play on special teams.
His physical style was on full display from the opening week. Wilcher scored twice in Warren County's 44-14 win over DeKalb County, including an 18-yard touchdown run, and was part of a deep backfield that overwhelmed the Saints.
And while it’s likely Wilcher will continue to rack up scores for the Pioneers, his true value to the squad may come more in the fear he puts into opponents. All year, defenses are going to try to figure out ways to stop him from carrying guys with him forward. And when there are too many committed to him, his teammates - just like they did in Jasper - will find ways to the endzone themselves.
Defenses won’t have the luxury to commit all their eyes and attention to Wilcher, but even before the opening whistle, when big No. 44 strolls toward midfield and the other team gets its first look at what it will have to deal with for the rest of the night, they’ll be on the lookout.
That's why Mikhail Wilcher is this week's Warren County Way Pioneer of the Week.
