Miller signs with Cumberland university

Shelby Miller just wanted to compete - the same way she had done her entire life. When she showed up at flag football tryouts, there wasn’t any thought of college signing days, just the idea she could be a Lady Pioneer.

The talented safety known for her fiery demeanor on the field and soft-spoken ways off it made her impact over the last two years. And along the way, she also caught the eye of Cumberland University, which offered her a chance to continue her flag football career. Miller became the third WCHS flag football player from the class of 2026 to sign with the Phoenix, joining Ariyanna Rippy and Allie Melton while making her mark in front of friends, family and teammates Wednesday in the WCHS auditorium.

It was a wild realization for Miller in the moment, especially for the kid who grew up as a hooper before becoming a gridiron standout.

“I really just did it because my dad told me to try it,” said Miller. “I had finished with basketball and I had played sports all my life, so I just said, ‘Let’s do it.’”

Coach Paul Willis Martin instantly realized what Miller could be when she tried out as a junior. While basketball coaches may have questioned her smaller stature, Martin knew she would make up for it with heart and grit.

“True character is revealed through adversity. Shelby stayed committed, stayed focused and that’s what makes this special,” said Martin. “You earned this through resilience and heart.”

Being clutch was something Miller could do as well. She knew how to rise to the moment from an early age, including pushing Centertown to a county championship with a game-winning free throw in the final seconds.

“She’s a perfect example of a lot of fight. Don’t judge by height - judge the fight,” said Kelly Eckenrod, who said her favorite memory of Shelby was the championship shot.

When it came to the football field, Miller did the same thing. She had game-sealing plays during her junior year, when she piled up 35 tackles and four interceptions, and continued with 15 tackles and an interception as a senior.

The numbers dipped early in her senior season when Miller was replaced in the starting lineup, but Martin said her response showed exactly why she earned a chance to play at the next level.

“Your coaches, teammates, family and everyone who has watched your journey know how hard you worked for this opportunity. We are proud not only of what you accomplished, but of how you accomplished it,” said Martin.

Cumberland University flag football coach Steven Miller believes those traits will fit perfectly with the Phoenix program.

“We’re excited for Shelby to come to Cumberland. Leadership, willingness to work and a passion for flag football - those are all qualities we saw in Shelby,” said Steven Miller. “She’s the kind of player we want in our program and in our culture.”

Miller said joining former teammates and friends at Cumberland made the decision even easier.

“They contacted me and said they’d love to have me. Ari already signed, Allie already signed and Bri was already up there, and I thought it’d be great to play with them at another level,” said Miller.

Miller plans to major in business while hoping to open her own cosmetology shop in the future.

Looking back on her time as a Lady Pioneer, it wasn’t one moment that stood above the rest.

“Everything has been great and the girls have been amazing,” said Miller. “I have so many great memories with them.”
