Lady Pioneers roll at home
The future is looking bright for the Lady Pioneers on the hardwood. The WCMS sixth-grade team crushed Coffee County 35-4 Tuesday night in its home opener, making a big splash after topping Cannon County on the road right before fall break to start the season.
With new head coach Leanne Morrison on the sidelines and a host of talented newcomers on the roster - many who helped Hickory Creek go undefeated and claim an elementary championship last year locally - the Lady Pioneers are showing they can make quick work of opponents. And they’ll have fun doing it.
“They’re so competitive and they love winning,” said coach Morrison, who is pulling double duty this winter as WCMS sixth-grade girls coach and Bobby Ray boys coach. “We’re going to continue to build their skills and working on getting better for the future, but their desire for the game is already there and that’s what makes me so happy.”
The Lady Pioneers came at Coffee County in waves Tuesday night, getting an opening onslaught from point guard Karah Fish to lead to a 15-2 halftime advantage. Fish kept the offense firing on all cyclinders while the defense - sometimes a diamond press and other teams a lockdown halfcourt mixture - overwhelmed the visitors.
While Fish ultimately finished with 10 points, including an emphatic And-1 late and a buzzer beating jumper to punctuate the victory, Arianna Aguilar’s second-half heroics pushed her to the team lead with 13 points.
Aguilar was a blur in transition, capitalizing on any Coffee County miscue to get easy layups. Priscilla Moore also had a big night as she scored six points and cleaned the glass, a welcome sight for WCMS as it has quickly established scoring at all levels through two games.
Anna Kate Bryant, a big pickup from Dibrell, added four points, while Daelyn Roland rounded out the scoring with two points for WCMS.
The Lady Pioneers will be hoping to double up their win total this Saturday at home when they face Cannon County (9 a.m.) and Upperman (1 p.m.) in battles.
Coffee County was able to take the nightcap as the Raiders rolled to a double-digit win over the Pioneers.
