Lady Pioneers Cruise Past Coffee County

The Warren County Middle School 6th grade Lady Pioneers put together a dominant performance on the road Tuesday night, defeating the Coffee County Lady Raiders 36-6 in a border battle.

Warren County wasted little to no time establishing control, opening the game with a 7 to 0 run, forcing the Lady Raiders to call an early timeout. But the break did little to slow the Lady Pioneers, who were able to hold onto the momentum to finish the quarter.

“Before the game, we talked about coming out and causing chaos on defense and being calm as well as patient on offense! They did just that,” coach Leanne Morrison said. “They were unselfish and looked to pass the ball sometimes too much.”

Following the timeout, Karah Fish was able to help the Lady Pioneers extend the lead by knocking down 2 big three-pointers. Warren County’s offensive production, combined with their defensive pressure, allowed the Lady Pioneers to close out the first quarter with a 19-0 advantage.

“Our defensive focus was to cause chaos and rebound,” said Coach Morrison. “Blocking out is something I cannot stress enough because we can’t out jump other teams.”

The Lady Pioneers continued to make things difficult for Coffee County throughout the first half, Warren County’s defense forced turnover after turnover, limiting the Lady Raiders’ opportunities to establish an offensive rhythm.

The Lady Raiders responded with a stronger defensive effort in the second quarter, holding Warren County to 4 points, all of which came from the free throw line. Despite the slower offensive stretch in the second quarter, the Lady Pioneers carried more than a comfortable lead into halftime but they were not done yet.

“At halftime we always talk about what went good vs what went bad… we stopped being patient and finishing around the rim in the 2nd quarter.” coach Morrison said. “We had to redirect our focus back to the main goal of tonight, be patient and calm on offense.”

It seemed the halftime locker room talk helped because Warren County came out of the locker room ready to finish the job, continuing to apply pressure defensively and limiting the Lady Raiders’ to score. The Lady Pioneers were able to regain their offensive rhythm in the third quarter, extending their lead to 29-5 heading into the final period.

With a large advantage heading into the final quarter, Warren County stayed focused and disciplined to control the game. The Lady Pioneers maintained their defensive presence and closed out the night with a convincing 36-6 victory over Coffee County.

Fish led Warren County offensively with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Priscilla Moore also made a significant contribution, finishing with 12 points as the Lady Pioneers brought home the border battle victory.
