MK Wright and the Lady Broncos had a huge win at home Thursday night.
It only took one week of elementary basketball action for some early favorites to emerge. Four teams had a chance to complete sweeps of their games this week, showing they’re capable of winning at home or on the road.
Boyd was the biggest winner Thursday, beating Dibrell 50-5 in the home debut for the Lady Broncos, while Hickory Creek and Irving College also improved to 2-0. The Lady Hawks went on the road and topped West Elementary 32-4, while Irving College followed up a win over Morrison at home Monday by beating Eastside 14-5 on the road.
Centertown entered Thursday with a chance to join the group of unbeaten teams, hosting Bobby Ray after opening the season with a 35-9 victory over Dibrell. The Lady Warriors showed they could be rebuilding their dynasty days, beating the Lady Stars 24-9.

Dibrell Lady Wildcats 5
The Lady Broncos didn’t slow down after a dominant opening-night victory. Instead, Boyd found even more ways to score.
A wave of Lady Broncos got involved Thursday, headlined once again by Sky Wright. Wright didn’t have to play much to roll up double figures, leading the way with 12 points as Boyd raced past Dibrell 50-5.
Twin sisters Kenna and Kayla Brewer did damage as well, combining for 10 points. And they weren’t even the only sibling combination to show out for Boyd.
Wright got to watch her younger sister MK, just a second grader, continue to make plays defensively and get on the board with four points.
Juliette Ferguson and Oly Cathcart added eight points apiece, Kayla Brewer and Britta Burger scored six each, Kenna Brewer and MK Wright finished with four apiece and Adrianna Helton added two. Eight different Lady Broncos scored in the victory.
Dibrell had to battle Boyd’s relentless defense throughout the night. Lyla Wood, in charge of taking the ball up for the Lady Wildcats, led her team with three points. Allison Mendez Montenegro broke a 20-point run for Boyd to start the game with a layup late in the second quarter.
Hickory Creek Lady Hawks 32
West Elementary Lady Wizards 4
Coach Shea Panter’s team just keeps finding new weapons in its quest to go back-to-back in the elementary league.
Thursday night, Kimber Lowe and Blakely Martin took their turns taking over.
Lowe was the force in the first half, using her size and strength to pour in points around the basket. By the time the second half rolled around, Martin was nearly unstoppable. Her speed made her uncatchable in the open court, her defense stayed on full blast until the final whistle and her shooting touch shined through around the rim.
Lowe finished with a game-high 12 points and Martin followed with 10, giving the duo 22 of Hickory Creek’s 32 points. Hattie Scott and Addy Walters chipped in four points apiece, while Maicee Panter added two.
West had a hard time finding openings against a stacked Hickory Creek defense, but the Lady Wizards were able to get a couple of baskets late. Kopelyn Brakeall and Alison Becerra scored two points apiece.
The 32-4 victory moved the defending champions to 2-0 and gave the Lady Hawks wins at home and on the road in the opening week.

Irving College Lady Tigers 14
Eastside Lady Bulldogs 5
Sophia Stubblefield and the Lady Tigers may have flown under the radar this week with two closer wins, but Irving College’s defensive prowess and ability to grind out victories won’t go under the radar for long.
Stubblefield outscored Eastside on her own Thursday and the Lady Tigers’ usual suffocating defense under longtime coach Jasmine Evans did the rest in a 14-5 road victory.
Stubblefield led all scorers with six points, while Sophia Hawkins, Mosley Pepper, Amaya Morrison and Willow Hertwig each added two points to give Irving College a balanced attack behind its leading scorer.
Eastside continued to battle and Mia Rodriguez found some success late, scoring her team-high three points in the fourth quarter. Sayla Winfree added two points for the Lady Bulldogs.
With wins over Morrison and Eastside in the opening week, Irving College will carry a 2-0 record into a showdown with Centertown next Thursday.

Centertown Lady Warriors 24
Bobby Ray Lady Stars 9
Lynlee Taylor missed opening night due to illness, but she was back and better than ever Thursday for the Lady Warriors.
Taylor scored a game-high 10 points, including eight in the first quarter as Centertown raced out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back in a 24-9 victory over Bobby Ray. The Lady Warriors carried a double-digit advantage the rest of the way, completing a perfect 2-0 opening week.
Taylor provided the early punch, but Centertown continued to show the scoring depth that helped the Lady Warriors put up 35 points in their opener. Camilla Lopez sank two free throws in the second quarter on her way to a four-point night, while Addy Barrett, Mia Higgins, Chloe Melton, Arie Shehane and Audree Fitts scored two points apiece.
Bobby Ray finally broke through in the second quarter when Avery Dodson and Devyn Gennings connected on buckets. Dodson went on to lead the Lady Stars with four points.
Emberlyn Taylor added a late bucket and Nyla Millraney wrapped up Bobby Ray’s scoring with a fourth-quarter free throw.
