Competitive Day for Area 9 Special Olympics

Every school that participated in the Area 9 Fall Games hosted at White County High School.

The Warren County Pioneers brought home a second-place finish from the Special Olympics Area 9 Fall Games, turning in a strong performance while representing Warren County on the competition stage.

From the opening game, the Pioneers competed with energy, determination, and plenty of pride as athletes took on competitors from across the area. Area 9 is made up of 13 counties but four teams traveled to compete in this year’s Fall Games. Warren County High School, White County High School, White County Middle School, and Algood Middle School each brought teams.

With each game, the Pioneers continued to battle, encouraging one another and showing the kind of teamwork that makes Unified Sports special.

Today’s event gave athletes an opportunity to showcase the hard work they have put in throughout the season. For the Pioneers, the preparation paid off with a second-place finish.

Each athlete had the opportunity to compete, encourage teammates and represent Warren County High School well. There were many highlights that happened for the Pioneers but there were a few plays that stood out more than others. Hudson Winfree hauled in two great touchdown receptions for the Pioneers. The excitement did not stop after the touchdowns.

Liyah Johnson, a Lady Pioneer for WCHS Soccer team, ran to celebrate with Winfree, the rest of the team followed quickly. “It was truly great to see everyone celebrating each other,” said Loree DeArmond, a teacher for WCHS.

That moment captured what the Fall Games were about for everyone participating. While the final placement was something to celebrate, the day was way about more than the standings.

“Today was a great day all around, to see everyone excited for another season of Special Olympics Unified Flag Football,” said DeArmond.

The Pioneers continued to push throughout the competition, earning points for their team and showing the same competitive spirit that has become a trademark for Unified Sports. With the second-place finish at Area 9 Fall Games, the Pioneers added another strong showing to a successful season.

Area 9 will take two flag football teams, three cornhole teams, and three fitness teams to State Fall Games on Oct. 16 and 17.

With Warren County already showing what they can do at the area level, the Pioneers will look to carry that same energy, teamwork, and excitement into the state competition.
