First WCMS flag football team selected

The future of Warren County Middle School flag football took the field Saturday, with a turnout of 95 girls gathering to tryout hoping to make the cut. With roster spots on the line, the athletes had the opportunity to show what they could bring to the team while head coach Bryson Cope and his coaching staff had hard decisions to make. 

Overall, Cope had to take the list down to 21 girls. Those making the cut were: Kiera Bonner, Khloe Howell, Hartley Adams, Ava Carden, Hailey Geesling, Abbie Brady, Willow Kennerly, Pepper Cooper, Jensi Griffith, Taylee Shehane, Shelby Foust, Claire Jenkins, Karigan Patrick, Nia Rich, Ahlevian Scott, AnnaLee Simpson, Karah Fish, Gabby Bryson, Ariana Aguilar, Sutherlyn Moore and EvelynAnne Bouldin.

Summer Higgin and Savannah Jefferson were listed as managers.

The large turnout made for an exciting atmosphere as players worked through drills to show the skills they had. From a 40 yard dash, a 20 yard dash, 5-10-5 drill, and running routes, the girls were given opportunities to impress Cope and the coaching staff. Cope said “It’s a great feeling. I love seeing a lot of interest in flag.” As for the amount of girls that showed up today, Cope said “I heard a lot of girls were trying out but I never imagined 95 girls.” As far as girls being excited about the middle school getting a flag football team, the numbers spoke for themselves. 

With this being the inaugural season, Cope has some expectations for the team.

“I expect to see a lot of growth and these 8th graders to become good assets for the high school team,” said Cope. 

As the team will get eight fall practices, Cope has already set in on the focus.

“The basics - With flag being a new sport, we have to start with the fundamentals. Also, I hope to learn what the high school team does on a regular basis,” said Cope.

Now the next wait will be until the spring when the Lady Pioneers make their official debut. But now at least the roster is set.
