The Daughters of the American Revolution have stepped up to help beautify downtown for the upcoming festivities.

“We asked several businesses downtown if we could decorate their windows with a patriotic display,” said Amy-Jo Stanford.

Stanford is Vice Regent with the Lt. James Shepherd Chapter, a local DAR.

The group sponsored patriotic window displays on the south side of the square, which will remain up through July 4. Featured windows include displays at Hoover and Son Insurance, Pirtle and Little Law Offices, and Panther Creek Forestry.

“Children will love the early school room and children’s bedroom,” said Stanford. “There is also a display about “Women in the Revolutionary War” for adults.”

To become a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, you must be a woman aged 18 or older and can prove descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American Independence. This includes military service, civil service, or other forms of patriotic contributions.

For information on how to trace your ancestry back to the revolutionary war and becoming a member, contact Regent Susan Ackerman at 1-865-679-9270. She can also provide more information about the organization.

The Lt. James Shepherd Chapter meets monthly, usually at Magness Library. There are also yearly meetings at local historic properties.
