Grand jury to hear assault case

A man was lead from the Warren County General Sessions Courtroom on Tuesday surrounded by deputies after becoming involved in a verbal altercation with Judge Ryan J. Moore.
“Sir, you do not need to be laughing,” said Moore, after defendant Caleb Brookins chuckled amusingly during the testimony of a Warren County Corrections Officer. “This is not a laughing matter.”
Brookins replied, “It is to me.”
“No, sir, it is not,” said Moore.
Brookins was in court for a preliminary hearing. He stands accused of assaulting a fellow inmate. The tensions between he and Moore came to a head when the judge found that there was enough probable cause to send the case to the grand jury.
Deputies surrounded Brookins and led him from the courtroom back into a holding cell. His departing words were, “I hope you feel good about this, because it doesn’t matter to me.”
Moore stated that some people cannot conduct themselves appropriately in public or while in jail. He also expressed appreciation for corrections officers, “Corrections officers are probably the most underappreciated members of law enforcement. I appreciate what they do.”
Brookins has been in jail awaiting trial on 15 charges of first degree murder, three charges of especially aggravated robbery, four charges of especially aggravated kidnapping, three charges of abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, one charge of financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable person, one charge of making a false police report, one charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two charges of possession of a firearm with intent to go armed.
Brookins and co-defendant Jessica Root are accused of the deaths of Warren County residents William Piechocniski, Dana Ramsden and Otis Hawks II. The victims were discovered in the 900 block of Merry Oaks Road in 2024.
Both defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
