Tennessee’s Free Hunting Day is almost here. On Saturday, Aug. 22, residents can enjoy a full day of hunting license-free as squirrel season officially opens. It’s the perfect chance to get outside, try something new, or reconnect with a classic Tennessee tradition. Whether you’re a seasonal hunter or someone who’s curious to give it a try, this day is designed for you. Hunter education requirements still apply, and those born on or after Jan. 1, 1969, will need to have completed a hunter education course or carry an Apprentice Hunter Permit. Be sure to check the 20265-27 Tennessee Fishing, Hunting, and Trapping Guide for more details, and remember to get permission before hunting on private land.
In other TWRA news, beginning July 22, 2026, all hunters wishing to hunt white-tailed deer over bait on private land must purchase the new Deer Bait Privilege License, regardless of age, exemptions, or lifetime licenses. The license costs $50 for Tennessee residents and $100 for non-residents, is valid for 365 days, and applies across all private properties where a hunter has access. This update follows the passage of Public Chapter 444, which authorizes hunting deer over bait on private land.
