Business spotlight: Tammy’s

Tammy’s on Beersheba Street is often mentioned as having the best burger in town.
You won’t get an argument about that from her.

Tammy Hudson has operated Tammy’s since 1999 and remembers when her husband, Gary, didn’t want her to buy the store.

“He wanted me to come work with him at Carrier,” said Tammy. “He said I would have more stability there.”

The irony of that statement is clear. Carrier shut down in 2004, while Tammy’s is still going strong some 27 years later.

“He ended up coming to work for me,” said Tammy, who quickly corrected herself. “Well, I guess a better way to say it is we now work together.”

Business at Tammy’s wasn’t always brisk.

“If you remember back years ago, this place used to be a package store,” said Tammy. “It took years for me to get people to realize I wasn’t selling beer and cigarettes.”

Being Tammy at a place called Tammy’s makes her somewhat of a celebrity.

“People come in and they want to see Tammy,” she said. “That’s what I enjoy most about this job. I meet a lot of people, and I’ve made a lot of friends.”

The most important part of the equation is her food is delicious. That’s what brings customers back.

“I’ve been to restaurants where the food is not up to par,” said Tammy. “I only serve food I want to eat myself.”

It’s truly a family business with Tammy and Gary working alongside daughters Tiffany Hudson and Dasha Jennings. Tammy said it’s the perfect job for her.

“Before this, I did nursery work and was always outside,” she said. “I really wanted something where I worked inside. If you enjoy what you’re doing, it doesn’t seem so much like work.”

So, is it the best burger in town?

“We go through 500 to 600 pounds of hamburger meat a week, so somebody likes it,” Tammy said.

Tammy’s on Beersheba Street is open six days a week. Check it out!
